Santiago | Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>LONDON \u2014 European stocks are expected to open higher on Wednesday, bouncing back from losses in the previous session.<\/p>\n<p>The U.K.&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/.FTSE\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">FTSE<\/a> index is seen opening 0.6% higher, Germany&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/.GDAXI\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">DAX<\/a> up 0.5%, France&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/.FCHI\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">CAC 40<\/a>\u00a0up 0.6% and Italy&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/.FTMIB\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">FTSE MIB<\/a> 0.7% higher, according to data from IG.<\/p>\n<p>Earnings reports come from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/ALV-DE\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Allianz<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/DTE-FF\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Deutsche Telekom<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/ZUR.N-CH\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Zurich Insurance<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/EONGY\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Eon<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/MRK-DE\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Merck,<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/RWE-CH\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">RWE<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/HLAA-FF\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hapag-Lloyd<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/P911-DE\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Porsche<\/a> on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>German automation giant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/SIE-DE\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Siemens<\/a> has launched a new 6 billion euros ($7.04 billion) share buyback program covering the next five years, after posting a forecast-beating net profit of 2.03 billion euros for the first quarter.<\/p>\n<p>The expected higher open comes after European stocks traded in negative territory on Tuesday as prospects for a speedy resolution to the U.S.-Iran war appeared increasingly remote,\u00a0and U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer&#8217;s premiership looked highly vulnerable to a leadership challenge. <\/p>\n<p>Starmer told his weekly cabinet meeting Tuesday that he was not resigning following the Labour Party&#8217;s poor local election performance last week, insisting he would &#8220;get on with governing.&#8221; He remains under pressure with ministerial aides and several junior ministers resigning in recent days.<\/p>\n<p>Yields on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/05\/12\/uk-gilts-borrowing-costs-keir-starmer-pressure-resign.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">U.K. government bonds<\/a>, known as gilts, extended gains with the benchmark\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/UK10Y\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">10-year gilt<\/a>\u00a0rising 10 basis points to hit 5.11% at one point.<\/p>\n<p>Global investors will be focusing on developments related to the upcoming meeting between U.S. President\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/donald-trump\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Donald Trump<\/a> and Chinese President Xi Jinping, where trade and the Iran war are expected to be discussed.<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u00a0on Monday said the month-old ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran was &#8220;unbelievably weak&#8221; and &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/05\/11\/trump-iran-war-ceasefire-life-support.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">on massive life support<\/a>&#8220;, after rejecting an &#8220;unacceptable&#8221; counterproposal from Tehran to end the conflict.<\/p>\n<p>Defense Secretary\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/pete-hegseth\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Pete Hegseth<\/a>\u00a0said\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/donald-trump\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Trump<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/05\/12\/trump-congress-iran-war-hegseth.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">doesn&#8217;t need<\/a>\u00a0congressional approval to restart strikes on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/05\/12\/iran-oil-energy-inflation-shelter-food-trump.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Iran<\/a>. The comment comes after the administration passed the 60-day mark required by federal war powers law to receive authorization for military force.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/05\/13\/asia-markets-today-live-updates-nikkei-kospi-csi-300-hang-seng-trump-iran.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Asia-Pacific markets<\/a> were mixed Wednesday, as investors digested the hotter-than-expected U.S.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/05\/12\/cpi-inflation-april-2026-.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">inflation reading for April<\/a>\u00a0amid concerns over higher oil prices. <\/p>\n<p>U.S. traders will look forward to more inflation data on Wednesday, with April&#8217;s producer price index due later in the session.
