When the final notes faded, the audience erupted.<\/p>\n<p>The performance Tuesday evening was part of a protest movement against this week\u2019s <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/eurovision-song-contest-what-to-know-2026-e4d6643c24cf4dfa26aa52a8a66b5eb7\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Eurovision Song Contest<\/a> in Vienna, with Israel\u2019s participation sparking anger over its devastating military campaign in Gaza and elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p>Five nations, including Spain and Ireland, are boycotting the <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/photo-gallery\/eurovision-spectacle-celebration-photos-34d196b2aa754dd1bccf5cefdfd79637\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">kitschy extravaganza<\/a> as performers from 35 countries compete in Europe\u2019s annual pop music competition, which marks its <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/eurovision-song-contest-what-to-know-2026-e4d6643c24cf4dfa26aa52a8a66b5eb7\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">70th anniversary this year.<\/a> Ten countries including Israel and favorite Finland <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/eurovision-song-contest-semifinal-israel-4ddc9d6c352bb53b0b9dbab240de0a94\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">won places Tuesday<\/a> in Saturday\u2019s final of the contest, whose motto is \u201cUnited by Music.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alternative concerts are taking place across Europe this week, including the \u201cUnited for Palestine\u201d event in Brussels, where European musicians performed alongside Murad and other Palestinian artists.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s always amazing to be in the same room with people who believe in the same things as you and people who believe that we can\u2019t just let the show go on,\u201d said Murad, who came close to being Iceland\u2019s competitor in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>    <a class=\"AnchorLink\" id=\"list-4b0001\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <a class=\"Link\" aria-label=\"Tracking the Gaza ceasefire\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/world-news\/israel-hamas-war-tracking-the-gaza-ceasefire\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"Image\" alt=\"A Red Cross convoy arrives to collect Israeli hostages who were released after a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas took effect, in Gaza City, Jan. 19, 2025. Many Israelis have said they feel they are being unfairly ostracized with the boycotts and other protests.<\/p>\n<p>But Amnesty International secretary general Agn\u00e8s Callamard said she believes Eurovision should throw Israel out of the competition like it did Russia in 2022 after its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSongs and sequins must not be allowed to drown out or distract from Israel\u2019s atrocities or Palestinian suffering,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>New boycotts and calls for reform<\/p>\n<p>Israel\u2019s place in the contest has become contentious as outrage has grown over the carnage in Gaza, the occupied West Bank, Lebanon and Iran, with <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/gaza-israel-europe-eu-war-protests-c67fe3880f730874a796b25d502b9e74\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">massive popular protests<\/a> and <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/israel-west-bank-europe-brussels-eu-hamas-4a24628bf778f9d6947483c7eb71fcf7\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">European Union politicians mulling new sanctions<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have to create an alternative because the participation of Israel is problematic,\u201d said Katrien De Ruysscher, founder of the activist group SOS Gaza, which organized the Brussels event along with rights group 11.11.11.<\/p>\n<p>The 2024 Eurovision contest in <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/eurovision-song-contest-israel-gaza-protests-21348ffc91292f33d07ee792af183eb8\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Malmo, Sweden<\/a>, and last year\u2019s event in <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/video\/pro-palestinian-protesters-march-in-basel-against-israels-participation-in-eurovision-song-contest-7b233b5219334a3c84708f054bf5fbe2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Basel, Switzerland<\/a>, saw <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/eurovision-song-contest-semifinal-gaza-protests-21a750c85dade5e3955152fd408b914a\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pro-Palestinian protests<\/a> that called for Israel to be expelled and <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/eurovision-israel-voting-changes-3513b0b10b21050335b9049b079e1272\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">allegations<\/a> that Israel\u2019s government broke the contest\u2019s rules to support its contestant.<\/p>\n<p>Performers are judged by juries in participating nations and viewers around the world, and this year the broadcasting union tightened voting rules in response to the vote-rigging allegations.<\/p>\n<p>But <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/slovenia-eurovision-broadcast-boycott-israel-f2f4a51ba88eb24b384f051a45189cff\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the broadcasting union declined to kick Israel out<\/a>, spurring five countries \u2014 Spain, Ireland, the Netherlands, Slovenia and Iceland \u2014 to boycott. Israel\u2019s President Isaac Herzog welcomed the union\u2019s decision, saying at the time that \u201cIsrael deserves to be represented on every stage around the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alternatives across Europe<\/p>\n<p>Organizers of the concert in Brussels said similar events are taking place in Austria, Germany, Slovenia, Italy and Spain.<\/p>\n<p>Spanish public television \u2014 which in past years broadcast the Eurovision contest \u2014 plans to air alternative broadcasting on Saturday evening.
