Apple submitted a filing to the European Commission today criticizing proposed measures that would force Google to open parts of Android to rival AI services. Here are the details.<\/p>\n

Apple joins Google against EU-mandated changes to Android<\/p>\n

Last month, the European Commission proposed<\/a> a series of measures designed to help Google comply with the region\u2019s Digital Markets Act (DMA<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Among them were proposed changes that would give rival AI services better access to several Android capabilities, allowing them to interact with installed apps to perform tasks such as sending emails, ordering food, or sharing photos.<\/p>\n

At the time, EU antitrust chief Teresa \u200bRibera said that these \u201cproposed measures (would) give more choice to Android users about \u2060the AI services they use and integrate in their phone.\u201d Google, meanwhile, called them an \u201cunwarranted intervention\u201d that would undermine \u201ccritical privacy and security protections for European users,\u201d according to Reuters<\/a>.<\/p>\n

At the time, the European Commission gave third parties until today, May 13, to submit feedback. The Commission is expected to issue its final decision in July on whether Google\u2019s plan complies with the DMA.<\/p>\n

Today, Apple submitted its own feedback, criticizing the EU\u2019s proposed measures and warning that they could create \u201cprivacy, security, and safety\u201d risks.<\/p>\n

As reported by Reuters<\/a>:<\/p>\n

\u201cThe DMs (draft measures) raise urgent and serious concerns. \u200cIf \u2060confirmed, they would create profound risks for user privacy, security, and safety as well as device integrity and performance,\u201d Apple said in its submission.<\/p>\n

\u201cThose risks are especially acute in the context of rapidly evolving \u200bAI systems whose \u200bcapabilities, behaviours, \u2060and threat vectors remain unpredictable as we are now seeing time and again,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n

Apple also reportedly argued that the European Commission is trying to redesign Android based on \u201cless than three months of work,\u201d replacing decisions made by Google\u2019s own engineers over years of developing the operating system.<\/p>\n
