They could also be seen as another indirect swipe at US President Donald Trump, who last year forced North Atlantic Treaty Organization allies to ramp up defense spending.<\/p>\n<p>Pope Leo, who has called himself a peacemaker, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Trump have clashed over the last few weeks after the pontiff\u2019s condemned the war in Iran. Earlier this month, Trump said that the pope was \u201cendangering\u201d Catholics and suggested that he was too tolerant of Iran\u2019s nuclear ambitions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf someone wants to criticize me for proclaiming the Gospel, let him do so truthfully,\u201d the pope said in an apparent response.<\/p>\n<p>Addressing students and faculty, Pope Leo invoked the legacy of past conflicts, saying that \u201cthe tragedies of the twentieth century must not be forgotten. The cry \u2018never again war!\u2019 of my predecessors, so in line with the rejection of war enshrined in the Italian constitution, urges us to form a spiritual alliance with the sense of justice that dwells in the hearts of young people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He also urged closer scrutiny of artificial intelligence in both military and civilian uses, warning against systems that could erode human accountability or intensify modern warfare. \u201cWhat is happening in Ukraine, in Gaza and the Palestinian territories, in Lebanon and in Iran,\u201d he added,\u201d illustrates the inhuman evolution of the relationship between war and new technologies in a spiral of destruction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pope Leo, the first pontiff to hail from the US, has become increasingly vocal in his defense of peace since being elected in May of 2025.
