{"id":46643,"date":"2026-05-19T03:09:30","date_gmt":"2026-05-19T03:09:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/europe\/46643\/"},"modified":"2026-05-19T03:09:30","modified_gmt":"2026-05-19T03:09:30","slug":"eu-tiptoes-toward-approving-us-trade-deal-politico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/europe\/46643\/","title":{"rendered":"EU tiptoes toward approving US trade deal \u2013 POLITICO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cDuring the last days, a lot of discussion and reflection happened and I\u2019m quite optimistic that we will find a solid compromise for good legislation which is Trump-proof and which reflects the European interest,\u201d Bernd Lange, the lawmaker leading the Parliament\u2019s negotiating team, told POLITICO on Monday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A coalition of center-left and liberal lawmakers has repeatedly come together to delay approval of the deal \u2014 first following Trump\u2019s threats in January to annex Greenland, a Danish territory, and then after the U.S. Supreme Court in February <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/02\/20\/trump-tariffs-supreme-court-ruling-00790687\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">struck down<\/a> most of his tariff agenda.<\/p>\n<p>Lange, a German Social Democrat who chairs the Parliament\u2019s trade committee, has led calls to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/eu-clash-looms-over-trump-trade-deal-autos\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">add as many guardrails<\/a> to the pact as possible.<\/p>\n<p>The lawmakers are at odds with the European Commission and EU capitals, led by Berlin, which want to approve the deal quickly and with minimal conditions \u2014 wary of potential retaliation from Washington.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s like an unhappy marriage.
