{"id":56306,"date":"2026-05-30T14:23:12","date_gmt":"2026-05-30T14:23:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/europe\/56306\/"},"modified":"2026-05-30T14:23:12","modified_gmt":"2026-05-30T14:23:12","slug":"beijing-threatens-retaliation-over-eu-moves-to-curb-imports-from-china-politico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/europe\/56306\/","title":{"rendered":"Beijing threatens retaliation over EU moves to curb imports from China \u2013 POLITICO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The statement came in reaction to a meeting of top EU officials on Friday to <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/read_26_1201\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/read_26_1201\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">brainstorm on how to counter Chinese overcapacity<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Friday convened <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/von-der-leyen-gears-up-fight-china-trade-ties\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">an orientation debate<\/a> with her 26 commissioners to explore a range of policy tools aimed at addressing the EU\u2019s growing trade imbalance with China, as a surge in Chinese goods ranging from vehicles to solar panels and clothes is undercutting Europe\u2019s industries, leading to factory closures and job losses. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe current state of the trade and investment relationship is not sustainable,\u201d reads an European Commission <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/read_26_1201\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">statement<\/a> following orientation debate. \u201cAs economic and security interests become ever more intertwined, both dimensions will require a more robust and coherent response.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The EU\u2019s goods trade deficit with China\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/policy.trade.ec.europa.eu\/eu-trade-relationships-country-and-region\/countries-and-regions\/china_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">widened to \u20ac360 billion last year from \u20ac312 billion in 2024<\/a>. It expanded even more sharply in the first quarter of 2026, trade figures show.<\/p>\n<p>While France and other member states have pushed for stronger measures to shield European industry, Germany has long warned against steps that could provoke retaliation from Beijing.<\/p>\n<p>But in a U-turn, Berlin on Friday <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/germany-gives-ok-for-tougher-trade-action-china\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">signaled<\/a> a greater willingness for the EU to take tougher action against a surge of Chinese imports, marking a shift from its traditionally cautious stance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think there is still a road to have a constructive dialogue with China, but we can\u2019t let Europe be the victim of a predatory strategy that is destroying our industry.
