{"id":61631,"date":"2026-06-05T16:34:34","date_gmt":"2026-06-05T16:34:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/europe\/61631\/"},"modified":"2026-06-05T16:34:34","modified_gmt":"2026-06-05T16:34:34","slug":"hungary-to-unveil-anti-corruption-reforms-needed-to-release-eu-funding-next-week-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/europe\/61631\/","title":{"rendered":"Hungary to Unveil Anti-Corruption Reforms Needed to Release EU Funding Next Week"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BUDAPEST, June 5 (Reuters) &#8211; Hungary&#8217;s government will \u2060submit \u2060to parliament next week anti-corruption \u2060legislation needed to release billions of euros worth of suspended European \u200bUnion funding, Transport and Investment Minister David Vitezy said on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Prime Minister Peter Magyar, who ousted \u200cveteran nationalist leader Viktor Orban \u200cin an April election, secured the release of 16.4 billion euros ($19.1 billion) last month \u2060on promises \u2060to scrap Orban reforms deemed by the EU to have harmed \u200bdemocracy.<\/p>\n<p>Hungary&#8217;s forint currency and bond markets have rallied strongly on Magyar&#8217;s pro-EU pivot and his pledge to prepare the country for adoption of the euro by the end of this decade.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This will be \u200ba comprehensive anti-corruption bill that also improves the transparency of Hungarian public life,&#8221; Vitezy \u2060told \u2060reporters. &#8220;This represents the rule-of-law criteria \u2060that will \u200ballow us to bring the EU funds home.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He said the legislation would enable Hungary \u200bto tap up to \u206010 billion euros from the EU&#8217;s pandemic recovery fund to finance transport and renewable energy projects, as well as funds to support small businesses and rental housing construction.<\/p>\n<p>The reforms will boost the powers of Hungary&#8217;s Integrity Authority, an anti-graft watchdog, and create more transparency in \u2060the asset declarations of public officials, with any omissions punishable by up to \u2060two years in jail, Vitezy said.<\/p>\n<p>He said the government would inject some 3.5 billion euros of EU recovery funds into the state development bank MFB to help finance some of these projects and avoid any loss of funding ahead of an end-August cut-off date.<\/p>\n<p>Hungary will also be able to offset 2.6 billion euros worth of investments previously drawn from its own resources with EU funding, Vitezy said, boosting the government&#8217;s room for manoeuvre with the budget following a surge \u2060in the deficit driven by heavy pre-election spending under Orban.<\/p>\n<p>Vitezy said some 4.2 billion euros of EU cohesion money would be used to finance investments in railways and transport infrastructure, while another 2.2 billion suspended over an erosion of \u200bacademic freedoms would be spent on higher education.<\/p>\n<p>(Reporting by Gergely \u200bSzakacs and Pawe\u0142 FlorkiewiczEditing by Gareth Jones)<\/p>\n<p>Copyright 2026 Thomson Reuters.<\/p>\n<p>Photos You Should See \u2013 April 2026<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/europe\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/1780677274_117_april-28-pyss-w01.jpg\" alt=\"Dancers rehearse before an audition for the Radio City Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall in New York, on Wednesday, April 22, 2026.
