As a frequent European traveler with 16 transatlantic flights under my belt, I’ve absolutely found this to be true. I’ve luxuriated at fancy day spas in Sweden and stayed at five-star hotels in France that would have been way out of my league back home. Some of the best food I’ve ever tasted has come from French supermarkets, for less than what I spend at my local chain grocery store.<\/p>\n
“Once you get past the sticker shock of actually getting to Europe, your hotel, rentals and everything else tend to be more affordable than you’d think,” says Pardi. In my experience, even flying there is sometimes cheaper than what I pay to fly domestically, especially if I book at the right time<\/a>. I’ve flown roundtrip to Ireland from Seattle for less than $500 multiple times.<\/p>\n Of course, some European destinations are more expensive than others, so we’ve rounded up the seven best budget-friendly European vacation spots for stretching your dollar as far as possible. From medieval villages in the Spanish and Italian countrysides to coastal Mediterranean towns in France and Albania, staggering beauty and luxe vacation vibes are surprisingly accessible across the Atlantic.<\/p>\n Andalusia, Spain Replace high-cost cities like Madrid with a trip to Andalusia, where lodging and food are far cheaper.<\/p>\n (Achim Thomae via Getty Images)<\/p>\n Go for: Reasonably priced Spanish dining, ornate ancient architecture and low-cost stays in historic hotels<\/p>\n Due north of Morocco and the Strait of Gibraltar, the Andalusia region of Spain is the southernmost point of continental Europe. Flanked by ancient clifftop villages and about 600 miles of coastline, it’s significantly more affordable than Madrid, Spain’s most-visited city, and clocks in as one of the most affordable destinations on our list.<\/p>\n “Granada is an amazing place to go in Andalusia,” says Pardi, noting that you can find “incredibly inexpensive” lodging, even during peak season. “Looking just now, I found over a dozen 11-day stays for under 700 euros total,” she says. Seville, Andalusia’s capital city, made Dollar Flight Club’s recent list<\/a> of the 10 most affordable European cities to fly into.<\/p>\n Pardi says food and drinks tend to be surprisingly affordable throughout Spain, and Jane Hermstedt \u2014 custom travel designer and the founder of Niveus Travel<\/a> \u2014 agrees: “Most restaurants will have a midday men\u00fa del d\u00eda,” a three-course lunch that usually costs about 10 to 15 euros, including wine. “In Granada, the old Andalusian custom of getting a free plate of food with your drink is alive and well,” says Hermstedt. “So after a round or two of drinks, you’ve essentially had dinner.”<\/p>\n Hermstedt lives in Spain, and says your money goes “roughly twice as far” once you leave Barcelona and Madrid. “Hardly anyone outside Spain knows about the Paradores<\/a>,” she says, explaining them as state-run, full-service hotels inside of restored historic monuments (think castles and stone monasteries). “You can sleep inside a medieval fortress for the cost of an average hotel room in the United States,” says Hermstedt. Some of the most affordable Andalusian Paradores are in C\u00f3rdoba<\/a>, Arcos de la Frontera<\/a> and Ayamonte<\/a>.<\/p>\n Saranda, Albania The best way to experience that Mediterranean beachfront life on a budget? Head to Albania.<\/p>\n (Thomas Faull via Getty Images)<\/p>\n Go for: A budget-friendly alternative to a Grecian Mediterranean beach vacation<\/p>\n “Albania is overlooked by a lot of American tourists,” says Pardi, “but it’s a place you should put on your list immediately.” Bordering the northeastern edge of Greece, Albania is a Mediterranean coastal country known for its fantastic beaches, sweeping mountain landscapes and culture of genuine hospitality.<\/p>\n Pardi calls Albania “extremely beautiful” and “incredibly affordable” (the ultimate combo) and recommends Saranda specifically. According to Pardi, it’s possible to book a week’s worth of lodging in seaside Saranda for as little as 400 euros.<\/p>\n Located along the country’s southern coast, Saranda is an understated beach town with direct, abundant access to the Mediterranean, without the high prices you’ll pay in Greece. The architecture in Albania isn’t especially unique, but what you’ll miss in epic historical monuments, you’ll gain in shockingly affordable rooms at beachfront villas and resorts. Dream Hotel Saranda<\/a>, Hotel Apollon<\/a> and Bougainville Bay Resort and Spa<\/a> deserve special shoutouts for their competitive rates, glowing reviews and ideal waterfront locations.<\/p>\n The city of Saranda faces its own wide public beach, and due south, you’ll find the whimsically named Mango Beach, Flamingo Beach and Heaven Beach. The real trick, though, is to head 30 minutes south by car to the tiny village of Ksamil, where you’ll find some of the most picturesque beaches in Albania.<\/p>\n You can also catch a high-speed ferry out to Corfu, a small Greek island known for its laidback white sand beaches and historic Venetian fortresses. About 30 minutes east of Saranda is The Blue Eye<\/a> nature preserve, a wildly colorful 50-meter-deep natural spring and swimming hole.<\/p>\n Umbria, Italy Many of the things we pay top dollar for in the U.S. are facts of life in Umbria \u2014 like wine and truffles.<\/p>\n (Buena Vista Images via Getty Images)<\/p>\n Go for: World-class food and wine and a low-cost alternative to Tuscany<\/p>\n “If you’ve always thought a week in the Italian countryside would be super expensive, consider Umbria over higher-cost areas like Tuscany,” says Yahoo Travel’s editorial director, Tiffany Yannetta<\/a>. Often called “the green heart of Italy,” Umbria borders Tuscany and is well known for fine foods like truffles, which tend to be less expensive here than elsewhere. You can have your fill by signing up for a truffle hunt or cooking class<\/a>.<\/p>\n “My mom and I visit Italy every year, and we recently did Umbria and Tuscany in the same trip,” says Yannetta. “We were both really surprised at how much cheaper everything was in Umbria. Our hotel costs were considerably lower, but they were just as lovely as the places we stayed in Tuscany.” Flights into Bologna (only a few hours from Umbria by car) also made Dollar Flight Club’s affordability list.<\/p>\n Perugia and Assisi are the best-known Umbrian towns, but they tend to be quite crowded as a result. They’re worth a visit, but don’t skip Spello in central Umbria, Orvieto to the west and Gubbio to the northeast. Driving the region’s entire perimeter only takes about five hours, so you can easily visit multiple villages by car during a short stay.<\/p>\n If wine is your thing, head to Montefalco, a small hill town in central Umbria known for its fine wine production, including wines made from the highly localized Sagrantino grape variety. Bocale Winery<\/a>, Antonelli San Marco<\/a> and Cantina Fratelli Pardi<\/a> (in the center of town) are among Montefalco’s standout wineries and tasting rooms.<\/p>\n Beyond the world-class food and wine, Umbria also offers plenty of natural beauty, such as Lake Trasimeno<\/a>, northwest of Perugia, and Marmore Falls<\/a> near Umbria’s southern province of Terni. Currently under consideration for UNESCO World Heritage Site status, Marmore is a 541-foot-tall manmade waterfall built by the Romans more than 2,000 years ago.<\/p>\n Lisbon, Portugal Watching the sun set over the Atlantic at Sao Jorge Castle should be on your Lisbon to-do list.<\/p>\n (Sean3810 via Getty Images)<\/p>\n Go for: Architectural marvels, affordable hotels and dining, and traditional Portuguese music and art<\/p>\n “Most people have heard of Lisbon, so they assume it’s quite expensive,” says Pardi, “but that isn’t the case at all.” She says accommodations in Lisbon (and throughout Portugal) are far less expensive than in many other European hot spots, and there’s plenty of delicious, low-cost dining too.<\/p>\n Yahoo Travel’s senior director of product management, Mitchell Stoutin, shouted out Lisbon as a great budget pick, calling it a city that’s “much cheaper than you’d expect.” Flying into Porto (a few hours north of Lisbon) is one of the most affordable ways to get to Europe right now, according to Dollar Flight Club.<\/p>\n Lisbon is perhaps most famous for its unique and varied architecture, resulting from centuries of conquests, revolutions and historical shifts. Some of the must-sees include the Torre De Belem,<\/a> Castelo de S\u00e3o Jorge<\/a>, and the brightly painted National Palace of Pena<\/a>, located about 45 minutes northwest of the city in Sintra. You should also make time to meander through the ornately carved stone halls of Jer\u00f3nimos Monastery<\/a> and snag a bird’s eye view of the city from the Santa Justa Lift<\/a>, a massive Neo-Gothic-style elevator tower overlooking the city.<\/p>\n Beautiful architecture isn’t all this coastal community has to offer, though. The city has a thriving arts and music culture, which you can learn about at the Fado Museum<\/a>, showcasing Portugal’s traditional folk music genre. You can also catch live traditional music performances throughout the city at venues like Clube de Fado<\/a> near the waterfront and Mesa de Frades<\/a> in Alfama, Lisbon’s oldest neighborhood.<\/p>\n Some of the area’s best nature spots include Arr\u00e1bida Natural Park<\/a>, an oceanfront nature preserve on the Set\u00fabal Peninsula, where you can swim, hike, climb and kayak on the edge of the Atlantic. If you’re a fan of bird watching, check out Tagus Estuary Nature Reserve<\/a>, home to the largest wetlands in Portugal.<\/p>\n Cassis, France I always thought the French Riviera was out of my league, until I went there.<\/p>\n (PSzabo via Getty Images)<\/p>\n Go for: A cost-effective way to experience the best of the French Riviera<\/p>\n Including the South of France on a list of budget-friendly vacation spots might seem like a joke, but it’s not. The region is surprisingly wallet-friendly compared to hot spots like Paris, especially in the offseason, and the waterfront paradise of Cassis (about 30 minutes east of Marseille) is a perfect way to soak in the French Riviera on a budget. Imagine bathing in the Mediterranean, dining on waterfront patios and walking along dramatic seafront cliffs dotted with wild rosemary. This is what you’ll get in Cassis, all for less than you might spend in a lot of U.S. vacation spots.<\/p>\n The small fishing village is nestled on the eastern edge of Calanques National Park<\/a> (sometimes called “the French fjords”), overlooking the electric-blue waters of the Mediterranean. When my fianc\u00e9 and I traveled to Cassis for our anniversary, we were floored by the affordability-to-luxury ratio. The kind of views, experiences, food and accommodations we’d never be able to afford in higher-cost areas suddenly became accessible to us when we arrived. It helps that some of Cassis’s biggest attractions (like its waterfront beaches and easy walking proximity to the national park) are free.<\/p>\n Like any proper French village, Cassis is dotted with local boulangeries and p\u00e2tisseries, where you can stock up on your daily baguettes, grab a coffee and sample some of the world’s best sweet treats. The town’s waterfront is lined with restaurants and caf\u00e9s offering fine French and Mediterranean dining options at a range of price points. For an upbeat city experience, head to nearby Marseille, where you’ll have even more budget lodging and dining options to choose from. Pardi calls Marseille “much less expensive than Paris,” noting that it’s also easy to get to by plane or train.<\/p>\n Doing the South of France on a budget is easier in the offseason, starting around November. This is when my fianc\u00e9 and I went, and we managed to stay in a gorgeous villa-style hotel overlooking the water for less than what we’d typically pay for a roadside budget hotel in the U.S. We also drove north from Cassis into the Luberon valley, where we wandered through medieval stone villages (our favorite was Bonnieux<\/a>) and revitalized at Spa Coquillade<\/a>, the best low-cost luxury spa I’ve ever experienced.<\/p>\n Ljubljana, Slovenia Castles, dragons and floating churches? Slovenia is something straight out of a fairytale.<\/p>\n (kasto80 via Getty Images)<\/p>\n Go for: A budget-friendly version of a classic Swiss Alps trip<\/p>\n If you’re longing for a trip to the Alps but don’t want to deal with Swiss prices, Slovenia is the answer. There, you can get a similar alpine experience for notably less, according to Stoutin. Ljubljana, the country’s capital and largest city, offers a unique metropolitan cultural experience just a stone’s throw from the mountains, and hotel rates are only slightly higher than what you’ll pay on average in the U.S. right now. Plus, you’ll be just 45 minutes from the Julian Alps, in a city straight out of a storybook, complete with a 15th-century castle on a verdant hilltop.<\/p>\n “Slovenia is great for anyone who loves outdoor activities,” says Pardi, like hiking, river rafting and camping. But there’s something for most people to enjoy in this small, unassuming country, even if you’re not an outdoor adventurer. In Ljubljana, check out the National Museum of Slovenia<\/a>, Ljubljana Castle<\/a> and Tivoli Park. Browse fresh, local foods at the riverside, open-air Central Market<\/a>. Walk (or boat) along the Ljubljanica, the river that runs through the city, and cross the town’s iconic bridges, including Dragon Bridge and Triple Bridge. Ljubljana is famously nicknamed “the City of Dragons,” bearing the mythical creature as its official symbol.<\/p>\n Pardi cosigns this budget-friendly pick: “Slovenia is a very affordable place to visit,” she says, noting that you can easily find weeklong accommodations for less than 1,000 euros. “Plus, most people can speak excellent English throughout the country, especially in the larger cities.”<\/p>\n If you stay in Ljubljana, you’ll basically be 45 minutes from everywhere, including Lake Bled<\/a>, famous for the fantastical, church-topped island at its center. Triglav National Park<\/a>, the gateway to the mountains, is right next door to the lake.<\/p>\n London, U.K. Famous for its sightseeing, London lets you experience much of its beauty and charm for free.<\/p>\n (Tim Grist Photography via Getty Images)<\/p>\n Go for: Endless free sightseeing, excellent budget-friendly food options and low-cost transportation<\/p>\n Calling out London as a budget-friendly travel spot does require a few caveats. Yes, lodging is a bit more expensive in England’s capital city than in many other places on this list, but plenty of other aspects of a London vacation make it surprisingly cost-effective. “You can do luxury London or budget London,” says Joanna Gammon, coauthor of Y! Wonder<\/a>, Yahoo Travel’s newsletter for budget travel, and cohost of the Wonderland on Points podcast<\/a>. “That flexibility is part of what makes it such a fantastic entry point.”<\/p>\n “Some of London’s best attractions are free,” she says. “Walking through Notting Hill, exploring Borough Market, seeing Big Ben, crossing Tower Bridge [and] wandering Hyde Park” are just a few of Gammon’s examples. Eating well in London is also super possible for budget travelers, according to Yannetta. “It’s an incredible international food city where you can have incredible meals for very cheap,” she says. “The best meal I had on my last trip, at Master Wei<\/a>, only cost me \u00a320.”<\/p>\n Most major U.S. airports offer nonstop flights direct to London, and Gammon says cheap deals “pop up constantly.” I fly round-trip to Northern Europe, including London, at least once a year, and I reliably score budget rates through airlines like Icelandair, Aer Lingus and SAS.
