So \u200bthis is the initiative that the Commission is now following up on,&#8221; Commission spokesman Markus Lammert told the EU\u2019s daily press briefing on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>According to a letter seen by Reuters and addressed to Abdul Qaher Balkhi, a Taliban foreign ministry spokesman, it will focus on &#8220;the return and readmission of Afghan \u200bnationals without a right to stay in the European Union&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Since returning to power, the Taliban have steadily <a data-testid=\"Link\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/asia-pacific\/un-rights-chief-says-taliban-decree-expands-executions-deepens-repression-2026-02-26\/\" class=\"text-module__text__0GDob text-module__inherit-color__PhuPF text-module__inherit-font__1P1hv text-module__inherit-size__EyiQW link-module__link__INqxZ link-module__underline_default__-okuC\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">curtailed rights<\/a>, restricting women&#8217;s freedom \u200bof movement, banning girls from education beyond primary school, and enforcing morality laws that limit free expression and access to employment.RIGHTS ORGANIZATIONS ASK TO \u200cABANDON PLAN<\/p>\n<p>Rights \u2060organizations have asked the European Union to abandon its plans to talk with the Taliban.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Any engagement with the Taliban needs to prioritize protecting human rights and accountability \u2014 not deporting people to danger there,&#8221; said Fereshta Abbasi, Afghanistan researcher at Human Rights Watch.<\/p>\n<p>The EU has not identified which Taliban representatives were invited to the meeting. Several senior Taliban leaders are under EU sanctions.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The desperate scenes of \u200bpeople &#8211; including EU staff &#8211; fleeing Afghanistan \u200bare a recent memory. It \u2060is unconscionable that the EU would now try and deport people to Afghanistan, which has only become more dangerous in the meantime,&#8221; said Eve Geddie, director of Amnesty International&#8217;s European Institutions Office.<\/p>\n<p>HUMANITARIAN \u200bCRISIS<\/p>\n<p>Hundreds of thousands of Afghans have sought asylum in Europe since 2021.
