From April 10 onward, the EES will be enforced at external borders across 29 European countries in the Schengen Area\u2014including France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Portugal, and Greece\u2014which removed internal border controls and allow passport\u2011free travel between member states.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The European Commission says that the system will replace traditional passport stamping with a centralized digital record of when travelers enter and leave the area.<\/p>\n
Who the New System Applies To<\/p>\n
The EES applies to all non\u2011EU travelers, including Americans, visiting participating European countries for short stays of up to 90 days within any 180\u2011day period. It covers visits for tourism, business, or short\u2011term family travel, and includes\u00a0visa\u2011free travelers such as U.S. passport holders, according to\u00a0Euro News.<\/p>\n
According to\u00a0EU authorities, the system is designed to detect identity fraud, monitor overstays, and flag travelers who may pose security risks.<\/p>\n
U.S. travelers entering the EU via the UK on routes where EU border controls are conducted on British soil\u2014such as Eurostar services from London St Pancras, the Port of Dover or the Eurotunnel terminal in Folkestone\u2014will complete EES registration in the UK before departure. There is no EES biometric collection for U.S. citizens in the United States.<\/p>\n
Passport Stamps Are Replaced by Biometrics<\/p>\n
One of the most noticeable changes for Americans will be the end of passport stamping.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Why the EU Introduced the Entry\/Exit System<\/p>\n
The\u00a0European Commission says EES is intended to modernize border security and improve enforcement of immigration rules. Since the phased rollout began in October 2025, officials say more than 24,000 people have been refused entry due to invalid documents or insufficient justification for their visit, while over 600 individuals flagged as security risks were identified through the system.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The digital system also allows border authorities across Europe to share records instantly, something not possible with manual passport stamps.<\/p>\n
Will Americans Face Travel Delays?<\/p>\n
Yes\u2014at least initially, according to\u00a0Euro News. Airports, ports, and rail terminals have warned of longer wait times, especially during busy travel periods, as first\u2011time visitors are registered into the system and biometric data is collected.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The Airport Association ACI Europe and Airlines for Europe (A4E) said, in a\u00a0joint statement, that, \u201cwaiting times are now regularly reaching up to two hours at peak traffic times, with some airports reporting even longer queues.”\u00a0<\/p>\n
Delays should ease over time as travelers become registered in the system, but travelers are advised to arrive earlier than usual for international departures and arrivals.<\/p>\n
Countries Not Using the System<\/p>\n
While most EU and Schengen countries are participating,\u00a0Ireland and Cyprus are not part of the EES and will continue using manual passport checks. Americans traveling exclusively to those countries will not encounter the new system.<\/p>\n
