{"id":85839,"date":"2026-07-03T15:25:11","date_gmt":"2026-07-03T15:25:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/europe\/85839\/"},"modified":"2026-07-03T15:25:11","modified_gmt":"2026-07-03T15:25:11","slug":"eu-imposes-sanctions-on-russian-researchers-over-navalnys-death","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/europe\/85839\/","title":{"rendered":"EU imposes sanctions on Russian researchers over Navalny\u2019s death"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">EU member states have imposed sanctions on six Russians linked to the death of the opposition leader Alexei Navalny in a penal colony in 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The Council of the European Union stated on Friday that the individuals concerned are scientists and researchers in the military sector who were involved in the development of chemical weapons, in particular a nerve agent called epibatidine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Their assets will be frozen, meaning they will not receive any funds, either directly or indirectly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The poison was detected in samples taken from Navalny&#8217;s body following his death and was probably the cause of death, the statement added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Navalny was regarded as Putin&#8217;s most prominent opponent, not least because he exposed cases of corruption. His widow, Yulia Navalnaya, accuses Putin of murder.
