The regulation is a major step forward in combating climate change. Nevertheless, oil and gas executives in the United States are pushing back at this regulation, claiming it would shut the U.S. oil and gas industry out of the EU market and deeming the level of detail necessary to meet EU standards impossible.

Despite committing to methane reductions, Exxon Mobil is one of the companies fighting the regulation, largely due to uncertainty and vague timelines. A spokesperson for the company said, “Importers will be forced to break the law or stop delivering energy to Europe. No amount of guidance or waivers will fix that. The EU must hit the pause button now and simplify the rules so industry can continue to reduce emissions while also delivering the energy that allows society to thrive.”

Executives are reaching out to the Trump administration for support. U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright wrote a letter to European officials, warning that the EU could face shortages if the law were to go into effect. This pressure helped convince over half of EU member states, including Germany, to push for delaying the rule.

***
Further reading: ‘Can you help us?’: US oil execs turn to Trump to topple Europe’s climate rules

Featured ESG Tool of the Week:
Klimado – Navigating climate complexity just got easier. It adopted a “Livestock Strategy” aimed at supporting livestock farmers during market, economic, and environmental challenges. With a central goal of strengthening the sector, the strategy is built on five priorities: crisis preparedness, competitiveness, sustainability, inclusivity, and excellence.

The Commission claims that a sustainable livestock sector will protect Europe’s food security, allowing the bloc to rely less on imports. The Livestock Strategy is paired with a Protein Action Plan. The plan aims to boost the share of protein crops and oilseed protein in the EU, increasing it from the current 25% to 35% by 2035.

Livestock farming in Europe currently employs around 7 million people and is held to some of the strictest quality, environmental, and safety standards.

***
Further reading: Commission sets the direction for prosperous livestock sector and a self-sufficient protein system

Related Articles

Here is a list of articles selected by our Editorial Board that have gained significant interest from the public:

EIB invests €60 million into the green transition in Bangladesh
European Investment Bank Group Headquarters in Kirchberg, Luxembourg.
