Italy&#8217;s FTSE MIB has risen 16.1%, the Netherlands&#8217; AEX has gained 15.5%, and Spain&#8217;s IBEX 35 has advanced 11.5%.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">Germany&#8217;s DAX is up just 1.6%, while France&#8217;s CAC 40 has climbed 2.3%.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">The Euro Stoxx 50, which tracks many of the eurozone&#8217;s largest listed companies, has gained 8.2%, less than half the return delivered by Austria&#8217;s benchmark.  <\/p>\n<p>        A little-known Austrian company behind the rally          <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">The ATX consists of only 20 blue-chip companies and has traditionally been dominated by banks, industrial groups and other cyclical businesses.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">At first glance, there is little to suggest it should outperform markets with far larger technology sectors.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">The explanation becomes clear once the index&#8217;s biggest winner is examined.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">AT&amp;S, formally known as Austria Technologie &amp; Systemtechnik AG, has become one of Europe&#8217;s standout performers this year.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">Its shares have surged 459% since the first trading session of the year, climbing from \u20ac32.20 at the end of December to \u20ac174 on Thursday.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">The company&#8217;s market capitalisation has increased from roughly \u20ac1.25 billion to about \u20ac7 billion in just over six months.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">That is a stronger performance than several well-known semiconductor companies associated with the artificial intelligence boom, including Micron Technology, Intel, AMD and Marvell.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">Despite its remarkable rise, AT&amp;S remains largely unknown outside the semiconductor industry because it manufactures a component that consumers never see.  <\/p>\n<p>            What does AT&amp;S actually produce?          <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">AT&amp;S specialises in integrated circuit substrates, one of the most critical components inside advanced semiconductor packages.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">Modern artificial intelligence processors cannot simply be mounted directly onto a circuit board.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">Instead, they sit on an integrated circuit substrate, an advanced platform that provides mechanical support while carrying thousands of microscopic electrical connections that deliver power and transfer data between the processor and the rest of the system.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">Although largely invisible to end users, these substrates are essential to the performance and reliability of modern chips.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">Producing them is also exceptionally challenging.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">Each substrate consists of multiple ultra-thin layers containing microscopic wiring that must be manufactured with extraordinary precision.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">Only a small number of companies worldwide possess the technological expertise required to produce the most advanced versions.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">AT&amp;S is the only major European manufacturer in this highly specialised market. Its main competitors are Japanese and Taiwanese companies, including Ibiden and Shinko Electric.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">According to figures presented by AT&amp;S to investors earlier this year, the global market for integrated circuit substrates was expected to grow by 18% in 2025 to approximately $11.1 billion (\u20ac9.7bn).  <\/p>\n<p>       Strong financial results reinforce investor optimism         <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">The favourable industry backdrop has already translated into stronger financial performance.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">During its 2025\/26 financial year, AT&amp;S generated revenue of \u20ac1.8 billion, representing growth of 21% at constant exchange rates. Excluding proceeds from the sale of its plant in Ansan, South Korea, EBITDA increased by about 50% to \u20ac418 million, while free cash flow turned positive at \u20ac236 million after being deeply negative the previous year.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">&#8220;2025\/26 was a strong and pivotal financial year for AT&amp;S,&#8221; Chief Executive Michael Mertin said when the company reported annual results on 21 May.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">Investor enthusiasm accelerated further on 13 June, when AT&amp;S announced agreements with AMD and another major technology customer, reported by Reuters to be Intel, to expand production capacity at its facilities in Kulim, Malaysia, and Chongqing, China.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">The planned investment of between \u20ac1.5 billion and \u20ac2 billion attracted significant attention because it was roughly equivalent to the company&#8217;s market value at the beginning of the year.  <\/p>\n<p>       One company is reshaping Austria&#8217;s stock market         <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">The rally has also altered the composition of Austria&#8217;s equity market.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">Financial institutions continue to dominate the country&#8217;s main investment vehicles. In the iShares MSCI Austria ETF, Erste Group remains the largest holding at 24.2%, followed by BAWAG at 12.5%. Together with Raiffeisen Bank International and two insurance companies, financial stocks still account for roughly half of the fund.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">AT&amp;S, however, has become the fourth-largest holding, representing 5.9% of the portfolio. Just a year ago, it represented only a tiny share of the portfolio.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">Austria has not suddenly become a technology market.
