TUC General Secretary Paul Nowak accused the Reform UK leader of plotting to strip away rights from millions across the country, and relying on ‘gimmicks and stunts’
Nigel Farage has been branded a “fake patriot” who the public will reject for having “no moral fibre of backbone”.
TUC General Secretary Paul Nowak accused the Reform UK leader of plotting to strip away rights from millions across the country, and relying on “gimmicks and stunts”.
While Reform UK are leading in the polls, Mr Nowak backed voters to reject them after seeing more of Mr Farage.
Speaking to this newspaper, Mr Nowak said: “I think he’s a fake patriot. What he is intent on doing is stripping away rights from millions of his fellow citizens. Tell me how that’s patriotic? Tell me how that’s standing up for the working class people of this country.
“The man spends more time at Mar-A-Lago than he does in Clacton, and maybe if he spent more time in Clacton talking to his constituents, he’d realise the issues that really matter to that majority of people. In Clacton, his own constituency. They support a ban on zero hours contracts, support a ban on fire and rehire, and support decent employment rights. Why doesn’t he?
“They want these headlines, they want to find excuses, and play to the culture wars. I think most people in this country are fundamentally decent and fair minded. I think ultimately they’re going to see through Nigel Farage and his gimmicks and his stunts, and his constant flip flopping on issues. The man has got no moral fibre or backbone, and I think that’s reflected in the political decisions he makes. I think the more people see of Nigel Farage, the less they’ll like him”.
Mr Nowak tore into the former banker over his pledge to rip up Labour’s workers rights’ package, which includes bans on exploitative zero hours contracts, and fire and rehire, as well as strengthened sick pay, protections against unfair dismissal and entitlements to parental leave.
The firebrand union leader said he understood why people were voting Reform, and urged the Government to do more to convince them to reject Mr Farage and his cronies.
I’d hope so, but I’m worried with how the media is clearly on his side, from the BBC to The Times. And in FPTP, you don’t need a big percentage of the vote. He could get a parliamentary majority on 30%.
News just in: far-left union boss dislikes right-wing party leader. More to follow.
Should they not have noticed that over a decade ago?
Expecting voters to reject Farage ‘after seeing more of him’ seems like hopelessly wishful thinking to me. He’s been all over our news programmes for years, huge numbers of people don’t pay any attention to policy and a surprising number don’t seem to care about the lessons coming out of Reform-led councils. If you don’t want Reform in you’ll need to actively oppose them, mate.
Whores himself out and says anything for a few quid on Cameo, wouldn’t be surprised if he’d whore himself out any say anything for a few million from the upper echelons
It was all very good copying Trumps playbook when it was just performative, now he’s trying to Trump playbook in the British electorate and realising it’s not going to work.
Farage has disgusting teeth, the guy is extremely ugly in every
conceivable way
The biggest threat to Farage is from his right not the Left.
If voters haven’t noticed that Nige is a faithless grifter only out for himself by now they never will. They might however be attracted by even bigger and nastier grifters promising even more ludicrous things.
The right wing vote will splinter amongst an assortment of far right outfits and the centre will remain.
I truly hope the comment is correct but the easy run and unchallenged rhetoric he pushes out tell me otherwise
One of the attractions of reform and Farage isnt that he will improve peoples situations, but that a lot of peoples situations are already shit(and have never really improved on successive govts) and they are voting Farage to make other peoples lives shit
Hard problem for other parties to address
Heres what some of the newspapers said today
Sun: we are going to waste £3 billion by joining the EU
Another article,
times or telegraph: we need to start drilling for gas and oil think about us ( fuck the environment and our kids and the future i guess)
With these papers able to put so much crap on the front page no wonder that OAPs vote for these scum…
He’s unfortunately like Chicken Pox.
You think he’s gone but just lying dormant until you’re in a weakened state and then he comes back to cause more pain and torment.
On other news, Pope Catholic and bear found defecating in woods.
Of course he is a fake patriot. He’s only in it for himself and his backers. Why else would you support stripping people of their rights, workers of their protections, lowering minimum wage, reducing women’s rights, and making the country generally shittier is not the actions of a patriot.
The problem is that it’s mostly the ignorant who vote for him so facts are irrelevant.
I played golf on Friday, and as I was getting my clubs out of the car a member of the club asked me if I was going to the World Cup.
I replied that I wouldn’t be going to the USA while the orange nutter was in charge.
He replied that he loves Trump and Farage and that he will vote for Farage as the country has ‘had enough’.
I ask him to elaborate and name three Reform policies he supports, he couldn’t get past boats and Brexit.
He said Bexit is wonderful and that all businesses men support it.
At that point I wished him a nice round of golf and made my excuses.
It’s this ignorance which is the biggest risk to this country.
This is Brexit reporting all over again. “No way are Brits this dumb!” Then the voting happens and it turns out that yeah, they are.
Voters rejected him so hard that he was voted in as an MEP, as an MP, scared the Tories into the Brexit referendum and won the thing. Believing these complacency articles yet again is to our own detriment.
One can agree with various remarks on the veracity of Farage’s character, while pointing out a deeper truth:
* It was never about Patriotism, Nationalism, Liberalism or other false idols set in front of the electorate by the entire political establishment aided and abetted by a captive free press.
It was always a question of:
* Democracy and the LACK OF Democracy in the UK, there is a need for MORE Democracy whichever label people think they belong to or whichever label the establishment tells you to support.
One immediate premise from this: Democracy does not scale – you have to break the nation into coherent constituencies, first, think, “Cantons” from Switzerland as a starting reference.
Eg Cornwall or Yorkshire would be suitable “mini but Real Democracies” to establish and replace the current undemocratic Establishment in central London.
I want to believe that, but I’ve also met the British voting public.
Sadly, I know what I want – but the will of the people, however ‘wrong’ I might think they are, will always win out. Simultaneously respectful and baffled by the beauty of democracy.
The only thing I’m confident about is that enough of my fellow voters pay no attention to politics and vote by habit or personality.
The tories staying in power for so long was a disaster that everyone could see and feel in their wallets during the coalition and yet they kept getting voted in.
ReformUK is full of openly racist con artists and yet are still popular thanks to the media being behind them. If the media went after them like they did the BNP then they ReformUK would die in the gutter like it should, like UKIP has. The far right of politics has no place in the UK and should never be accepted.
We are not a nation of extremists in either wing, left or right.
