📢 Important update for student spouses in Finland (proposed law from 2027)

Currently, student spouses in Finland can:

✅ Register at the TE Office

✅ Join free integration language courses

✅ Receive benefits almost immediately

👉 Under a new proposal (from 1 January 2027), student spouses who arrive after this date would generally:

❌ Not be eligible for integration benefits

❌ Not have access to full-time TE Office integration courses

Exceptions may apply if the person:

✔️ Has Finnish/Swedish/Sami as a mother tongue

✔️ Has Finnish or Swedish at B1.1 level

✔️ Has a residence permit based on temporary protection

📌 In practice, this means:

• Language studies may need to be self-funded

• Living costs would rely mainly on the student’s income

⚠️ Note: This is still a proposal. If passed, it would apply only to people who move to Finland after 1 January 2027.

  1. This sounds completely reasonable. It’s already generous that a bachelor’s student’s spouse can get a residence permit, to begin with.

  2. Good. The current system is completely boneheaded.
