  1. In case the article gets a paywall in the meantime:

Luxembourgers continue to be minority in capital
While Luxembourgish remains the most spoken language nationally, Portuguese is widely used at home and French dominates workplaces

Some 79.6% of Luxembourg City residents are foreign-born or hold a non-Luxembourgish nationality, according to the 2021 census published by the national statistics office Statec on Monday.

The Luxembourg commune in fact has the country’s lowest proportion of Luxembourgers at 29.4%, while rural communes such as Nommern have the highest share at 80.4%.

Statec’s census analysed the country’s 12 cantons – regional administrative divisions – subdivided into 102 communes. Looking at the Luxembourg canton, numbers shift significantly: Luxembourgers make up 46.4% of the population, while 53.6% are foreign nationals. Among children under 15, only 38.2% hold Luxembourgish nationality.

The data show that Luxembourg’s residents are increasingly mobile. Nationally, 54.9% have lived abroad for at least a year at some point. In 2021, 6.7% of foreign-born residents arrived in the country, with higher shares in the cantons overall (9.9%) than in the Luxembourg commune itself (5.8%).

    Languages at home and work
Luxembourgish remains the most spoken language nationally, used by 48.9% of residents, followed by Portuguese (15.4%) and French (14.9%), according to the report.

However, the linguistic landscape differs between home and workplace.

In communes like Differdange, 46.3% of residents speak Luxembourgish at home, while 41.4% speak Portuguese. At work, French dominates, spoken by 68.7% of residents.

Luxembourgish is more common in northern cantons such as Clervaux, Echternach and Wiltz, while in Remich, French and Luxembourgish are used equally. Portuguese, despite its prominence at home, remains less used professionally.

Younger cohorts are far more linguistically and nationally diverse
Among foreign nationals across the Grand Duchy, the largest groups are Portuguese (15.4%), French (14.9%) and Italians (3.6%).

The population is predominantly working-age, with children under 15 making up roughly a quarter of the population in some communes, yet only 38.2% of them hold Luxembourgish nationality. By contrast, residents over 65 are predominantly Luxembourgish.

  2. They are smart, locals, let the foreigners pay high rents in the city while we live in big places outside.
