It seems I've got some mild mold growing my bed frame in my bedroom. I'm renting my fully-furnished apartment from my landlord, so I'm not sure what the correct protocol is here. Do I try to clean it myself first, or should I immediately let my landlord know? Also, will this be expensive to fix and who's liable to pay for it? It seems to be surface level, since there's no other mold in my apartment (I have humidity meters which are always well below 60% and temperature is always above 16 degrees, and I also ventilate twice a day properly).

  1. Try a „Schimmelentferner“ spray you can get in a Baumarkt/Drogerie and ventilate very well when using it.

To reduce the risk for mold, keep the furniture a little more away from the wall so the air can ventilate behind it.

  2. That looks like the result of having the bed frame too close to the wall.

Just walk to your local supermarket, buy mold removal spray and spray it on (follow the directions on the bottle) and it should be gone.

In future, don’t put your bed so close to the wall, rather keep a little distance (5-10 centimeters) for air flow.

  3. Instead of spray, get some DanKlorix or a cheaper brand, and apply with a Brush. This creates less aerosol and less smell. Be careful and wear gloves in any case!

  4. How much longer do you intent to rent the place? If it’s just a couple of years, the fix is cheap, easy and fast:

This looks like it’s mostly surface level mold, so just get this: [https://www.agoshop.de/schimmelentferner/anti-schimmel-sets/](https://www.agoshop.de/schimmelentferner/anti-schimmel-sets/) [This isn’t advertisement, I simply don’t know of any other comparable product that works even remotely as well, if there is, I would really like to know].

Use the mold killer as instructed, let it fully dry, spray on the impregnation solution, let it fully dry – and you won’t have to worry about mold for at least another year or two. You probably want to spray the fabric of the bedframe as well (the impregnation spray shouldn’t cause any stains).

Put some stoppers between the bedframe and the wall to leave a permanent gap for air circulation, ~5cm.

That will likely be the end of it.

If you intend to stay much longer, it’s potentially worth starting a paper trail. This looks like an outside wall with a heat bridge and is likely going to continue to cause problems – the above is merely a functional workaround.

  5. As others have said, make sure that air can circulate behind your head board. If the problem persists, you could consider raising your room temperature by say 1C.

And make sure you do Stosslüften your bedroom twice a day in winter. (Or have an eye on air humidity in the room).

  6. I bought this thing: MELLERUD Schimmel Vernichter Aktivchlor

Its amazing, had Problem once in Shower, very little mold, just some spots, until now never came back.
