Hello Norwegian friends,

We are planning to visit your lovely country with a three year-old, a 15 month old, and their 71-year-old grandfather. We would very much like to see the Aurora.

Our vague plan is to fly into Oslo in October, visit Oslo a bit, take a train to Bergen, see some fjords/etc., and then fly north, maybe to Tromsø, to (hopefully) see the Aurora. We were considering taking one of the Aurora tours (e.g. chasing lights, that one with the owl, etc.). Does anybody have experience doing one of those with children this age? If so, do you think they would tolerate it well?

Also, does anybody have any particular recommendations for things to see and do in these areas? It can be nature stuff, cultural stuff, restaurants, etc. We’re very open to suggestions.

Thanks so much, internet! As a thank you, I have included a picture of our beloved Norwegian Forest Cat, Emperor Clawdius. Unfortunately, he will not be joining us to visit his ancestral homeland.

  1. Addendum: we’re not sure if we’re going to rent a car, but for what it’s worth, we are from New York State, and we have plenty of experience driving on snow and ice.

  2. I can’t answer your questions, but I want to say thank you for posting a picture of Emperor Clawdius, he is very handsome!

  3. Nice cat!

I dont know if October is the best month for tourism in general, spring and fall are the quiet seasons here north, if you want to see the Aurora mid winter is a better bet, november-january is when we have polar nights so it gives you the best chance.

As for rental cars, it’s not guaranteed that you will be allowed to rent one, since the public here has started demanding tourists not be allowed to drive on our roads in winter, and a Chinese family killed two 70 year olds this week the debate has been opened about restricting tourists. If nothing happens, which is the most likely outcome because our governmental officials are spineless idiots, Please make sure you rent a car with 4×4 and studded tires

Someone more knowledgeable on this will probably give better advice, im just a fed up local who wants our roads to be safe during winter, since they are clogged with germans during summer

  4. When traveling from Oslo to Bergen, do the Norway in a Nutshell tour instead of a straight run to Bergen.
