A recent study by Diaconia University of Applied Sciences (Diak) offers an important reality check. In 2023, people with a foreign-language background made a net positive contribution of around €225 million to Finland’s public finances. In comparison, the balance for native-language speakers was significantly negative (5 billion euros).

The study also highlights strong participation in work and education:

61% of foreign-language speakers are either employed or studying, compared with about 50% among native-language speakers.

These findings challenge a long-standing narrative. Rather than being a burden, immigrants are active contributors to Finland’s economy and society.

This is not about “us vs. them.” It’s about building a shared future where conversations around migration, work, and integration are grounded in facts, fairness, and respect, not assumptions.

Let’s keep the discussion open, informed, and human. Because a more inclusive Finland is a stronger Finland for all of us.
