I have been collecting notes about leaving Germany for a few years, so I decided to write a short guide about it. I thought it would be a quick, easy task, but it took me a few weeks to get the details right, especially with regards to taxation.
I still need to untangle a few things. For example, you need a deregistration certificate to cancel your contracts with a 1-month notice period, but you can only get that certificate 1 week before you leave.
I’m also not sure about how taxation works for your yearly bonus (which you are sometimes legally entitled to) once you have left the country. In general, the whole taxation aspect seems like such a hassle.
Nothing is every easy and unbureaucratic in Germany.
