Hello,

I live in a WG in Germany. I accidentally placed a hot pan on the laminate kitchen countertop and it caused a small burn mark.

I’m worried about:

• Whether this counts as normal wear or damage

• If the landlord can deduct money from my deposit

• Roughly how much such a repair usually costs

Would it be better to inform the landlord now or try a small repair/cleaning first?

Any advice would be really appreciated.

  1. Do you have a Privathaftpflichtversicherung? If Not, get one now

  2. Damage

    yes

Try Scheuermilch otherwise contact your Private liability insurance

  3. Looks like IKEA Eckbaken Beton.

If needed and still available at Ikea (the worktop is currently being discontinued), the entire worktop costs a maximum of €60 new.
How do i know? I look at the same Pattern every day

Edit: in the end, it’s a kitchen. Accidents happen and that thing will see much more in the future Especially in a WG, right?

  4. No, it’s not normal wear and tear.
And yes, your landlord can take the repair cost from your deposit.
There is no fixing it. The top needs to be replaced and that will cost upwards from 500€, I would guess, without knowing the details.

You can try to have your Haftpflichtversicherung pay for it. However, they usually don’t cover gross negligence and will probably refuse. But it costs nothing to try.
