I absolutely get this impression. They’re terrified of the UK missing out on the next big tech boom and being beholden to the US/China. But they don’t seem to be conisdering the consequences of letting these companies practically have free reign
They, like most governments are obsessed with what AI could potentially do for the intelligence and defence sectors. The British government believes that being at the forefront of this technology could put us ahead for the next generation of geopolitics and fear that not going all in could have us being left behind. They let the British people suffer under rationing while they developed the Bomb, no one should be surprised they’d have the same mindset with AI.
Yup, we’ll be a bone dry oasis but with Skynet controlling us by 2030. Good work people in charge!
I develop small AI tools for not-for-profits and I’ve spoken to a few government ministers about AI and they are clueless. Even someone in a senior ‘AI advisor to the government” capacity thinks AI is just mindlessly putting Copilot on everyone’s office laptop. They have no idea what they are doing and are just pushing everyone towards US big tech services such as ChatGPT etc.
But the UK has all sorts of innovative AI tooling that is being largely ignored by UK Gov. One does not want to make accusations of backhanders but the zeal people are throwing UK into US big tech is quite worrying.
Everyone is just caught up in the hype of AI and spending billions on it is the new fad so we’re not left behind.
The horse has bolted though, MPs can complain about the impact of AI on rights all they like but regardless of what happens it’s here to stay. They can regulate it all they want but countries like China and the US will go full steam ahead and AI is starting to prove it’s useful and it’s starting to get to a point that Everyone is just caught up in the hype of AI and spending billions on it is the new fad so we’re not left behind yet again.
Hopefully the demotion of Kyle and the dissolution of DSIT slowed some of the simpering capitulation to the techbros. Successive governments have been feckless when it comes to technology. Happily abrogating their gamekeeping responsibilities to the poachers.
What we want from the Government is proper regulation, sovereign infrastructure, an R&D investment regime that is fit for purpose and a wholesale move away from US proprietary tech to Open Source. Will we get such a sensible strategy? Of course we won’t because they don’t have a clue.

Wing at the forefront of AI dev and services is key to our economic future. We should be doing everything we can to attract investment in this key area, especially lowering the cost of energy.
MPs should be made to have the logos of their corporate donors sewn onto their suits, like F! drivers, so we can see whom they are really representing.
I sort of get why. If AI does dramatically change work and wealth then we need to be on the right side of it. Over the last half a century or so our economy has pivoted massively towards services and away from making stuff and it also relies a lot on foreign investment. It’s that service economy that is incredibly vulnerable to AI.
If AI starts replacing human tasks, who do you tax? How do you get the revenue from that? At the moment, if humans do stuff it gets taxed – they get paid a wage, it gets taxed. They use what’s left to buy a Freddo – it gets taxed.
Do you tax AI where the data centre is? Well in that case you want the data centres. But then you know another country that doesn’t care will tax them less. The US are busy stripping away copyright law to help AI be successful.
Its a really, really tricky spot to be in.
