Just seems like there’s a general employment crisis
We might need to start having a conversation about allowing a lot fewer immigration visas for things like care and stuff. Would open up a lot of jobs surely
Maybe we should cut the minimum wage for the over 50s too
“Similar to NEETs”? Aren’t the people in question also NEETs?
I’m sure only BNIC will be blamed here versus calling this cohort *lazy* or *entitled* but to be honest I think the reality is these people are less likely to posses the skills businesses generally favour in the current climate. Most of the blame needs to be on businesses being unwilling to train, retrain and retain their own staff and each decade the shits in technology are leaving people behind.
Improving worker rights and conditions are my general inclination (businesses being forced to invest in their staff versus shareholder pay-outs and executive bonuses) but i’m sure someone with a neo-liberal way of seeing the world will be willing to tell me how this is impossible and only the status quo will work despite the status quo only being good if you are rich already.
I worked for a while as a work coach I met a woman who literally said she didn’t have to work because she was a grandma and had to look after her daughters child who also didn’t work.
If they’re anything like my aunt she took early retirement at like 50 and now 7 years later has to go back to work. She’s lucky in that she wound up working in the local pub because who she knows, but I imagine a lot aren’t so lucky and would be a struggle to find employment especially as they likely only done 1 job for most their life unlike younger gen’s who change on a whim. Makes it difficult to employ when you’ve no experience and likely just want something part time and have a life to work around a lot more than teens.
Wow, I wonder if importing people instead of investing in locals is having consequences…?
Yeah but lucky for india we employee a few million of them through contracts
But I thought the problem was lazy entitled kids who don’t know how to pull their socks up and knuckle down!
I am dreading it, I am being made redundant in October. Job hunting is already a nightmare. Sent loads of leads out and two refusals so far the rest I am still waiting for. I am 50yrs old and it’s depressing that I am looking for a new job at my age.
Once you are over 55 you are essentially considered unemployable for regular jobs. People in very senior posts are an exception to this, as they just seem to become more senior, and their experience is valued, but for normal jobs not.
And realistically I’m finding my access to jobs that I’d have done without a second thought in my thirties is limited now. I’ve got a lot of transferable skills, and can do plenty of phycoal things as part of a varied job, but – eg – standing up for 8 hours at a stretch is no longer one of them.
Just go and hand out your CV, and give them a firm handshake /s
Another Labour achievement. Its ok though as the engineers of the employment crisis are now sat on the backbenches or quit as MP’s.
As a young worker who struggled to get a permanent role. There’s a massive issue of nepotism as well. I’ve been turned down so many jobs because the managers friends kid wanted the job. Even where I’m working someone got their kid a job cus they spoke to the manager. Add in the costs of employing a young person and all the stores that keep closing and it’s a recipe for disaster!
I wonder how big a factor illness is? People get more physical problems as they age and NHS waiting lists for some issues are long (6 months just to get a first appointment, years for surgery). There’s going to be many people over 50 who want to work but can no longer do the jobs they used to. The DWP/ Job centre also ignore real prejudices and barriers to work, they act as if companies don’t discriminate on age or disability.
Its a employment crisis all around, old, young, middle age.
It’s the only form of discrimination that is actively tolerated
Maybe spending 30 years declining almost all housing, infrastructure and industrial development wasn’t a good idea?
Does it account for those who decide to go into early pension since I didn’t see that mentioned. All my colleagues ever for the past 5 years have been in the 50+ range and all times to retire before 60. Many did.
I also met some that retired and later decided to work again after already spending 3 or so years in retirement.
This would not show on a elderly “neet” stats.
The article seems also disingenuous in the sense that it frames it as if it was unfair that younger meets get 10 times the attention despite the rather obvious fact that if 50+ are out of work, it’s terrible, but if youth stays out of work, it’s catastrophic by a few orders of magnitude (litterally)
(Because older die off, the youth keeps being around for decades, and if they didn’t work, their kids are less likely to be “good” workers, find jobs or be able to socially integrate into working like the same way as those who grew up in never-working households on benefits which is a well recorded phenomenon)
Well good thing all the simple, entry level and non skilled jobs that would normally go to aging people haven’t all been occupied by economic migrants or anything

Seems mad they’re comparing these as two separate groups when anyone over 50 without a job is literally a NEET by definition. But yeah the whole situation just shows how broken the jobs market is when both young and old are getting left behind. Probably easier to blame immigrants than admit we’ve got a systemic problem, eh?
been noticing more and more over 50s joining the supermarket i work at over the years, and its usually because they got made redundant and their field isnt hiring
