How about we plow all of that additional spend into recruiting (and keeping) new bus drivers

A big problem is that there is a massive amount of people in Ireland who think they are too good to use public transport. That’s why commuters get absolutely rode with shite, overpriced services and nobody is really fighting that side at all really.
No we wouldn’t. No country this size has a free public transport and thanks for a great journalism, looks like it’s time forget governments wrong doings and blame cars for bad public transport.
Haulage and agriculture are being supported and no public transport can address that. Also no public transport of any significance whatsoever unless you’re in a city – and even then it’s inadequate – especially so if everyone abandoned their car and started looking to take it.
they don’t want to make it free because it’s already at capacity. It’s not a money thing.
I’d love to get a cargo bike for my kids. But we are both self employed so we don’t qualify for the grant

First of all, it’s not cheap to drive. Anyone who actually does have a license and drives will tell you that. The vast majority of the country drives and if the vast majority of the country is getting hit quite hard with rising insurance, high fuel costs and combine that with the cost of living, people are rightfully pissed about it.
Also, public transportation needs to be much better outside of Dublin for the majority of the country that relies on their cars precisely because the country has a very dispersed population and because of government policies that have shaped our infrastructure and lives.
Outside of Dublin, you absolutely need cars. We can’t hop on a DART or a Luas or a multitude of buses to get us to our location.
Can’t we have both and pay for it by closing tax loopholes for billionaires?
