What horrendous sexism. I thought we agreed that judging women as if their primarily purpose was being a mother was a relic rightly left in the 1970s? I’m sympathetic to the idea that some criminals are victims too, and there are alternative approaches that would be more productive for those people; but that is nothing to do with them being women, and the logic would *also* apply to the far larger number of men that are currently in prison.
And of course, there is an argument that “women are the primary caregivers, so we need to treat them more leniently” is self-reinforcing. If the state *doesn’t* extend the same courtesy to fathers, the state is the one that is making the mothers the primary carer by default, surely?

It wasn’t enough that women are less likely to be suspected of and investigated for crime by the police, less likely to be charged when they are, less likely to be convicted in court, and more likely to receive lenient sentences if by some miracle they are convicted. It is now that women shouldn’t go to prison *at all* because trauma and external life factors caused their crimes.
For men of course, it wasn’t trauma and external factors that led to a life of crime but their own agency and free choice…
The government needs to create a support system for men leaving prison, especially after longer sentences. They just end up homeless or back in prisons. This country is falling apart.
So what will happen to female prisoners or the concept of imprisonment for criminal women in the criminal justice system?
Anything but actually building more prisons and speed.
And no, ones planned for 2036 don’t count, it doesn’t take that long in any other country that actually cares.
