  1. It’s crazy how a store asking for proof of purchase is grounds for defamation in Ireland.

Our compo culture is a cancer.

  2. >He awarded both €2,500 each with district court costs

Anyone who worked retail for long enough knows not to detain Joe Public.

  3. No wonder many shop staff are told not to bother saying anything when they see a customer stealing something.

  4. The headline is misleading.

“security man had said to them: “You did not pay for that, put it back.”

“the alleged defamatory words were spoken in the presence of other customers and loud enough for them to have heard.”

That is a bit different than asking had they paid for it or not

  5. > For that they were entitled to compensation, but the court could not award much. He awarded both €2,500 each with district court costs.

A nice holiday sorted for chancing their arm.

  6. Couple awarded 5k for false imprisonment should be the headline.

  7. Worked security for 10 years, they teach you rule #1 is to never stop a shop lifter unless you see them yourself taking something and passing the last point of paying and #2 you never accuse them of stealing, you ask them for a receipt. The security company should be paying more than just 5k
