I find the concept of groundnews.com interesting, showing different sides of the news-spectrum around topics. But I have the feeling the content is (very) US centered with local Belgian news (sources) practically non-existant.

Was wondering if anybody

  • Has a paid subscription and finds it valuable for anything else than US centered news (I get enough of that naturally).
  • Or if other similar platforms exist that have a more Eurocentric or at least better balanced feed. Any leads (& experiences?)

  • If I'm stuck going around and reading & comparing different sources on my own accord.

    (chose News flair, although this isn't actually news, I found it fitting, if needed I'll happily adapt)

  1. The thing is, in the EU thats kinda less required than in the US. In the US there is more of an us vs them mentality when it comes to the political spectrum, which the news reflects, so multiple sources is pretty important there. While in the EU that mentality does exist, it’s not that common and most news is in a specific style (mostly neutral, satire, stuff like that)

    Most newspapers or website in Belgium are center to right.
    A few center left.

    Almost all of them pro capitalism and pro Europe.
    No anticapitalistic ones 🥲

    At least for the french ones.

    Always take a big big grain of salt to what les échos or la libre says about taxes and economics. Those buffoons are profoundly néolibéral 😂

  3. I don’t know if it’s that worth it, but the way they’re out there sponsoring a gazillion content creators makes me highly suspicious of the site. The Raid Shadow Legends for people with a slight political interest, if you will.

  4. I wouldn’t, for the simple reason that it markets itself as a part of the solution while actually being part of the problem.

    They very much lean into the us vs. them, grading everything in left vs. right, polarization (especially on the internet) is one of the main struggles of our generation. This ain’t the solution, I see value in getting news from different sources, but acting like every piece of writing can neatly fit on a left to right line with some ‘centre’ in the middle is… not helpful.

  5. I had a paid subscription but stopped using it as most of the news that was presented to me was not newsworthy, and for over 90% of the articles it didn’t really matter if it was “left-leaning” or “right-leaning” (think “New restaurant opening in your city!” type news).
