Guten Morgen everyone,

I’m currently starting the Umschreibung process for a non-EU driving license in Ingolstadt and would love some quick advice.

About me: I have 10+ years of driving experience (manual & automatic).

I went to a driving school and got a price list — the full package is close to €2000, which feels a bit high.

I’m trying to keep it closer to €1,500 if possible.

My questions:

• Is it realistic to skip theory materials from the school and prepare only with an app like Führerschein Gold?

• Can I limit driving lessons to \~8 hours, given prior experience, or do schools usually push for more?

• Can I do the Anmeldung myself, or is it basically mandatory to pay the driving school for it?

One more thing the driving school told me (and this worries me):

They said if I submit my foreign driving license, I won’t get it back.

Is that actually true, or does it depend on the country / authority?

I’m not trying to cut corners, just avoid unnecessary costs.

Would really appreciate tips, experiences, or reliable resources 🙏

Thanks!
