Got a 2 in first semester and might get a 1 or 2 in second, can I still move on to Vg2?

  1. Yes but no. If you fail a lot of courses, you might not be able to go on to VG2. If it’s only one or two, it should be no problem, officially. It might be hard to follow the curriculum though, if you have failed courses on VG1. I would suggest that you ask the counselor (rådgiver) at your school. Good luck!

  2. I work as a teacher in upper secondary school (VGS / videregående skole).

Halvårsvurdering 1 is not a grade that will impact your ability to move on to your second year (VG2). It is a “underveisvurdering” – an assessment of your performance in that subject based on the work you have done up until december/january. It can potentially impact your ability to be accepted as a practice student if you are applying for practice placement as part of your education programme (many vocational studies require you to apply for these practice placements as part of your education) – but a failing grade does not automatically exclude you.

If your final grade at the end of the school year is 1, then you will need to re-do that subject or take a postponed exam/privatist-exam. Some students can apply to be exempt from certain subjects, but this is very rare and I would recommend you talk to the student advisor at your school if you are concerned.

A final grade 2 is a passing grade, and generally speaking you will automatically be able to move onto VG2. The only exception is if you are applying to a competitive study programme, where you are using your grades when you apply.
