I live on the 5th floor of a typical Swiss residential building. There are no fire extinguishers or smoke detectors anywhere.
I would like to buy a fire extinguisher and smoke detector to install in my flat, but there are so many options, any advice?
Smoke alarm + Carbon monoxide device?
Flats below me have had kitchen incidents where they left food cooking etc. If my escape route is blocked, how the hell will I go down the stairs?
Also, all the stairway windows are locked! Which I find ludicrous! I have asked the cleaner to leave them unlocked, but he says that it could be dangerous for kids (no kids in my building). Also, how it is any more dangerous than a kid falling from the balcony? It is the parents' responsibility.
Do I need to learn to abseil and have a rope handy? 🙂

There are sooooooo many different types of smoke alarms online that any reviews would sort of be pointless. Have a look at the top sellers on Galaxus or Brack etc.
I’ve got two in my flat along with a fire blanket and 2 fire extinguishers. They were all just top sellers. I’ve got no idea about the legality of keeping the stairwell windows locked though, so I can’t help you there sorry!
1) Write to the landlord to inform problems you noticed
2) No answer = write to your municipality (usually Urban department)
They will come to see problems and do what they have to do.
Always better to tell instead of just notice and do nothing.
No offense, only good sense.
I think you are overreacting
