A court has overturned a decision by Poland\u2019s media regulator to fine TVN, a large,\u00a0American-owned private broadcaster<\/a>, for airing a documentary which alleged that Pope John Paul II showed neglect in dealing with child sex abuse cases in the Catholic church while still a bishop in Poland.<\/p>\n

In 2024, the National Broadcasting Council (KRRiT)\u00a0fined<\/a>\u00a0TVN 550,000 zloty (currently \u20ac128,000) for a documentary it had\u00a0screened the previous year<\/a>. The decision was issued by the council\u2019s then head, Maciej \u015awirski, an appointee of the former national-conservative Law and Justice (PiS) government.<\/p>\n

He argued that the programme\u00a0\u201cwas contrary to the law and social good, harming religious feelings, in this particular case of Catholics, and disinforming public opinion\u201d.\u00a0Offending religious feelings is a\u00a0crime in Poland<\/a>, carrying a potential prison sentence of up to two years.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
