À West Cowes sur l’île de Wight, The Old Byre résulte de la transformation de deux granges agricoles avec une approche architecturale originale. Le projet de cette maison contemporaine, conçu par Gianni Botsford Architects, repose sur une stratégie où la lumière et la performance thermique orientent chaque décision. Les empreintes d’origine ont été conservées, tandis que des ajouts contemporains modifient la perception intérieure au fil des heures. Le plan s’organise autour d’une cour centrale servant à la fois de circulation et de pièce extérieure. Dans la première grange, le salon, la cuisine et la salle à manger forment un volume ouvert. À l’extérieur, des panneaux en polycarbonate enveloppent certaines façades, diffusant la lumière naturelle profondément dans l’intérieur.
La seconde grange accueille trois chambres et une bibliothèque, toutes ouvertes directement sur la cour centrale. Les briques apparentes et les poutres en bois restent visibles, reliant le projet à l’histoire agricole du site. Lauréate de plusieurs distinctions, dont un prix national du RIBA, The Old Byre a été salué pour ses intérieurs changeants selon la course du soleil. La stratégie énergétique de la rénovation des deux granges inclut une pompe à chaleur et une isolation thermique par l’extérieur. Cette approche a permis d’atteindre une classification EPC B, rare pour une transformation de granges.
Two barns converted into an architect-designed house on the Isle of Wight
In West Cowes on the Isle of Wight, The Old Byre is the result of the conversion of two agricultural barns using an original architectural approach. The design of this contemporary house, conceived by Gianni Botsford Architects, is based on a strategy where light and thermal performance guide every decision. Their original footprints have been retained, while contemporary additions alter the interior perception as the hours pass. The layout is organised around a central courtyard that serves as both a circulation space and an outdoor room. In the first barn, the living room, kitchen and dining room form an open space. Outside, polycarbonate panels envelop certain façades, diffusing natural light deep into the interior.
The second barn houses three bedrooms and a library, all opening directly onto the central courtyard. Exposed brickwork and wooden beams remain visible, connecting the project to the site’s agricultural history. Winner of several awards, including a RIBA national award, The Old Byre has been praised for its interiors that change with the course of the sun. The energy strategy for the renovation of the two barns includes a heat pump and external thermal insulation. This approach has resulted in an EPC B rating, which is rare for a barn conversion.
