C\u2019est le cas sous les rifts de l\u2019Afar, en Ethiopie, ces foss\u00e9s dans lesquels se creuse un futur oc\u00e9an du fait de l\u2019\u00e9cartement des trois plaques tectoniques (africaine, arabique et somalienne). En analysant les caract\u00e9ristiques isotopiques de<strong> <\/strong>130\u00a0\u00e9chantillons de roches volcaniques pr\u00e9lev\u00e9es le long de ces rifts, une \u00e9quipe internationale pluridisciplinaire (g\u00e9ochimiste, statisticien, vulcanologue, g\u00e9ophysicien, etc.) a reconstitu\u00e9 la nature des remont\u00e9es du manteau terrestre.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph  \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41561-025-01717-0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"Nouvelle fen\u00eatre\">L\u2019\u00e9tude publi\u00e9e dans Nature Geoscience <\/a>montre comment ces panaches, des remont\u00e9es de roches chaudes provenant de la zone de transition entre manteau sup\u00e9rieur et manteau inf\u00e9rieur, vers 650\u00a0kilom\u00e8tres de profondeur, sont conditionn\u00e9s par la vitesse d\u2019\u00e9cartement des trois plaques. De fait, les trois rifts de cette r\u00e9gion sont \u00e0 des stades diff\u00e9rents. Le plus ancien, celui du golfe d\u2019Aden, a d\u00e9but\u00e9 il y a 35\u00a0millions d\u2019ann\u00e9es, alors que le plus jeune, orient\u00e9 vers le centre de l\u2019Ethiopie, n\u2019a que 11\u00a0millions d\u2019ann\u00e9es.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph  \">Plus l\u2019\u00e9cartement entre deux plaques est lent, plus ces remont\u00e9es mantelliques sont comprim\u00e9es, changeant ainsi la nature du magma et sa composition. Mais cet article, dont la premi\u00e8re autrice est Emma Watts, postdoctorante en vulcanologie \u00e0 l\u2019universit\u00e9 galloise de Swansea, conclut qu\u2019il s\u2019agit bien d\u2019un seul et m\u00eame panache qui alimente ces multiples syst\u00e8mes volcaniques. <\/p>\n<p class=\"reading-mode-only \"><strong>Il vous reste 51.18% de cet article \u00e0 lire.
