Les chercheurs pr\u00e9f\u00e8rent s\u2019appuyer sur des restes cr\u00e2niens et dentaires pour d\u00e9finir celle-ci \u00e0 partir d\u2019\u00e9l\u00e9ments distinctifs. C\u2019est pourquoi le \u00ab\u00a0pied de Burtele\u00a0\u00bb, d\u00e9couvert en\u00a02009\u00a0dans cette localit\u00e9 de la r\u00e9gion de l\u2019Afar, en Ethiopie, et vieux de 3,4\u00a0millions d\u2019ann\u00e9es, \u00e9tait jusqu\u2019ici rest\u00e9 orphelin. Ce rattachement, par ricochet, pourrait remettre en question le statut d\u2019une c\u00e9l\u00e8bre australopith\u00e8que, Lucy (Au. afarensis), d\u00e9couverte en\u00a01974\u00a0\u00e0 quelques dizaines de kilom\u00e8tres de Burtele. Consid\u00e9r\u00e9e dans le monde anglo-saxon comme notre anc\u00eatre, elle pourrait se voir d\u00e9log\u00e9e de notre branche sur l\u2019arbre \u00e9volutif des hominines par l\u2019arriv\u00e9e de deyiremeda, estiment certains pal\u00e9oanthropologues.
