\u00c0 West Cowes sur l’\u00eele de Wight<\/a>,\u00a0 The Old Byre r\u00e9sulte de la transformation de deux granges agricoles avec une approche architecturale originale. Le projet de cette maison contemporaine, con\u00e7u par Gianni Botsford Architects<\/a>, repose sur une strat\u00e9gie o\u00f9 la lumi\u00e8re et la performance thermique orientent chaque d\u00e9cision. Les empreintes d\u2019origine ont \u00e9t\u00e9 conserv\u00e9es, tandis que des ajouts contemporains modifient la perception int\u00e9rieure au fil des heures. Le plan s\u2019organise autour d\u2019une cour centrale servant \u00e0 la fois de circulation et de pi\u00e8ce ext\u00e9rieure. Dans la premi\u00e8re grange, le salon, la cuisine et la salle \u00e0 manger<\/a> forment un volume ouvert. \u00c0 l\u2019ext\u00e9rieur, des panneaux en polycarbonate enveloppent certaines fa\u00e7ades, diffusant la lumi\u00e8re naturelle profond\u00e9ment dans l\u2019int\u00e9rieur.<\/p>\n

La seconde grange accueille trois chambres et une biblioth\u00e8que, toutes ouvertes directement sur la cour centrale. Les briques apparentes et les poutres en bois restent visibles, reliant le projet \u00e0 l\u2019histoire agricole du site. Laur\u00e9ate de plusieurs distinctions, dont un prix national du RIBA, The Old Byre a \u00e9t\u00e9 salu\u00e9 pour ses int\u00e9rieurs changeants selon la course du soleil. La strat\u00e9gie \u00e9nerg\u00e9tique de la r\u00e9novation<\/a> des deux granges inclut une pompe \u00e0 chaleur et une isolation thermique par l\u2019ext\u00e9rieur. Cette approche a permis d\u2019atteindre une classification EPC B, rare pour une transformation de granges.<\/p>\n

Two barns converted into an architect-designed house on the Isle of Wight
In West Cowes on the Isle of Wight, The Old Byre is the result of the conversion of two agricultural barns using an original architectural approach. The design of this contemporary house, conceived by Gianni Botsford Architects, is based on a strategy where light and thermal performance guide every decision. Their original footprints have been retained, while contemporary additions alter the interior perception as the hours pass. The layout is organised around a central courtyard that serves as both a circulation space and an outdoor room. In the first barn, the living room, kitchen and dining room form an open space. Outside, polycarbonate panels envelop certain fa\u00e7ades, diffusing natural light deep into the interior.<\/p>\n

The second barn houses three bedrooms and a library, all opening directly onto the central courtyard. Exposed brickwork and wooden beams remain visible, connecting the project to the site’s agricultural history. Winner of several awards, including a RIBA national award, The Old Byre has been praised for its interiors that change with the course of the sun. The energy strategy for the renovation of the two barns includes a heat pump and external thermal insulation. This approach has resulted in an EPC B rating, which is rare for a barn conversion.<\/p>\n
