Tan France dyed his signature silver hair dark for a role but plans to return to his natural color soon

The Queer Eye star clarified the change is not a midlife crisis and expressed pride in his gray hair

France is currently filming the holiday comedy Clashing Through the Snow alongside Christopher Briney and Julia Fox

Tan France‘s new hairdo has fans scratching their heads.

The 43-year-old silver fox recently dyed his tresses a near-black color, and he addressed the decision in a new Instagram video on Wednesday, April 29.

“Don’t freak out. I know my hair’s dark. It’s fine,” France began the clip, before amending, “Well, no, it’s not. I know it’s very weird to see me with dark hair. It’s weird to see myself with dark hair.”

The Queer Eye star went on to share that the new look is for a role he’s filming, saying he wasn’t intending on publicly sharing the dark ‘do but after several run-ins with fans, he felt he needed to explain.

“I wasn’t going to share this at all, but I’ve been out twice in the last couple days, and people are very confused,” France said. “So I just need to make it clear, this is not a midlife crisis.”

The father of two added, “I hate dark hair on me. I love my silver hair. I love my grays. I’m not ashamed of them whatsoever. I’m really proud of my grays.”

France said that after his undisclosed project wraps, he plans to return to his roots.

“I’m gonna go right back — hopefully — to my natural color in the next month or two,” he promised. “Don’t freak out.”

According to IMDb, France is currently filming the holiday comedy Clashing Through the Snow alongside Christopher Briney, Julia Fox, Lukas Gage and more.

The film is a contemporary take on Planes, Trains and Automobiles, which follows two co-workers who go on a cross-country road trip.

Outside of his work on Queer Eye, France also acted in a 2025 episode of the series Deli Boys and has lent his voice to several animated roles.

When it comes to his look, this isn’t the first drastic change France has made. In January 2025, he debuted a much more cropped haircut after his past pompadour got some online hate.

“I would love to say it’s because I just fancied a change,” the stylist told Page Six at the time. “But really, what sparked it was I did something that I try really hard not to do — which is I looked at comments about myself after the new season.”

Adding that fans expressed the look made him appear “uptight,” France decided to make the change.

“I saw so many people hate my hair. And I thought, ‘Oh, I didn’t realize they hated [it] so much. So maybe I’ll try something [new] while I’m still ‘relatively’ young,’” he said.
