Tan France debuted a new hair color on April 29.
“I just need to make it clear: This is not a midlife crisis,” he said in an Instagram video.
The Queer Eye star said that his transformation is “for a role.”
Ever since Tan France burst onto the scene in Netflix’s Queer Eye, he’s been known for his signature silver hair. But now, he’s completely switched up his look, and the transformation is very unexpected. On April 29, the 43-year-old reality star posted a video on Instagram with noticeably darker hair.
“Don’t freak out,” France said at the start of the video. “I know my hair is dark. It’s fine. Well, it’s not. I know it’s very weird to see me with dark hair. It’s weird to see myself with dark hair.”
The Deli Boys actor said the new look is “for a role,” but didn’t specify which project it was for. He also clarified that the dark hair is “not a midlife crisis.”

“I wasn’t going to tell you. I wasn’t going to share this at all, but I’ve been out twice in the last couple of days, and people are very confused. So, I just need to make it clear: This is not a midlife crisis.”
France continued, “I hate dark hair on me. I love my silver hair. Just know, I love my grays. I’m not ashamed of them whatsoever. I’m really proud of my grays. This is just for work and I’m gonna go right back—hopefully—to my natural color within the next month or two. Don’t freak out.”
People in the comments, though, did indeed freak out. Fellow Queer Eye star Antoni Porowski wrote, “my brain is glitching so hard rn 🙃,” to which France responded, “I know, Ant. Mine has been for days now😂.”

Gigi Hadid also hopped in the comments, writing, “Hahahahaha Tannyyyy this is u in a parallel universe 😆😆😆😆.” France then wrote back, “right? I’m so grateful I got to be in the grey haired universe😂.”
And as for that role? Actor Rahul Kohli simply wrote, “James Bond,” and France joked, “bahaha, that’s exactly the role it’s for. Correct 😂.”

France has previously spoken about his gray hair.
“I’ve been going gray since I was 12,” he told The Guardian in 2021. “People assume I’m older than I am, which is frustrating. I still feel 21, but when I get out of bed, my knees creak and I think: ‘How am I nearly 40?’”
