Evidence

Keyword searches for “France lockdown” and “France total lockdown” on Google did not yield any credible reports suggesting that the French government had imposed a nationwide lockdown. We also reviewed the official social media handles and public communications of French authorities and found no announcement regarding any complete lockdown in the country. We also checked the World Health Organization’s (WHO) website, which has not notified about a lockdown situation in any country, including France.

Two Cruise-Ship Outbreaks Lead To Preventive Measures

However, multiple reports indicate that France has imposed targeted preventive measures following a hantavirus outbreak linked to the Dutch cruise ship MV Hondius. According to reports, one of the five French passengers evacuated from the infected vessel tested positive for hantavirus on May 11. French health minister Stéphanie Rist confirmed the case.

According to the decree, seen here, issued by French authorities, “Individuals who were aboard the MV Hondius between April 1, 2026 , and May 10, 2026, and who have arrived in the country, are placed in quarantine in a healthcare facility for the duration of a medical and epidemiological assessment. Following this assessment, they will remain in quarantine or isolation for a total of 42 days…”

“Persons who have been in contact with a passenger of the ship MV Hondius or with any person who has been infected or is at serious risk of infection with the Andes strain hantavirus as a result of the infection observed on this ship may be subject to quarantine or isolation measures when it appears that they are at serious risk of infection…”

“French nationals or individuals who have entered the national territory and were passengers on one of the following international flights must report to the health authorities without delay… They observe a home quarantine measure pending an assessment of their risk of infection, which is carried out within three days of their being reported.”

Also, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General, had on May 8 briefed the media regarding the Hondius hantavirus outbreak, saying, “While this is a serious incident, WHO assesses the public health risk as low…”

Separately, France also witnessed another outbreak involving a cruise ship stranded in Bordeaux after a norovirus (stomach flu) outbreak onboard. According to reports, the vessel was carrying more than 1,000 passengers, most of whom were British nationals. French authorities stated that passengers showing symptoms were being treated onboard by the ship’s medical team and advised to self-isolate.

Subsequent reports published on May 14 stated that French authorities had eased restrictions on the vessel and allowed asymptomatic passengers to disembark, while infected individuals were instructed to remain in isolation onboard.

Furthermore, the French Embassy in India juxtaposed an X post, which claimed that there is a lockdown in France, with a photo of people in an open public place with the caption, “Meanwhile in Paris…”

Meanwhile, the 79th annual Cannes Film Festival is underway, which is taking place from May 12 to May 23, and the extensive media coverage does not mention any lockdown measures currently in effect. The reports also describe film fans gathering overnight at Cannes with some bringing food, water and blankets to get through the hours ahead, further contradicting the viral claims of a lockdown-like situation in the country.

We have reached out to the embassy for further information on the viral claims. The copy will be updated upon receiving a response from them.
