The Kabul Tribune (KT) – Footage of U.S. President Donald Trump mocking French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte during a private lunch has sparked strong reactions in France, France 24 reported.
The French president said the comments were “neither elegant nor up to standard,” after Trump was seen imitating a French accent and making remarks about Macron and his wife during the meeting.
According to reports, Trump made the comments while criticizing NATO allies for not joining the war against Iran. He also questioned NATO’s reliability and suggested the alliance might not defend the United States in a major conflict.
In France, politicians across the political spectrum reacted with anger. Yaël Braun-Pivet, president of France’s lower house of parliament, said the remarks were inappropriate and came at a time when global leaders should be focused on serious international issues.
Even Manuel Bompard, a leading figure in the left-wing France Unbowed party, defended Macron, calling Trump’s comments “absolutely unacceptable.”
French media also criticized the remarks, with Le Figaro describing them as another controversial outburst from the U.S. president.
The controversy also follows Trump referencing an old video that appeared to show Brigitte Macron pushing the French president during a trip to Vietnam, which Macron has previously dismissed as misleading.
