American Airlines passengers will soon have a new Wi-Fi provider for their travels as the airline plans to add Starlink internet service “on more than 500 narrowbody aircraft” starting in the first quarter of 2027. American described Starlink as the fastest Wi-Fi in the sky in its announcement.

The term “narrowbody aircraft” refers to single-aisle aircraft. American will update Wi-Fi on its fleet, including new Airbus A321XLR and A321neo deliveries.

“As a premium global airline, we are continuously seeking out world-class partners like Starlink to deliver what our customers need and want,” American Airlines Chief Customer Officer Heather Garboden said in a statement via the official announcement. “The addition of Starlink solidifies American as a leading airline in keeping passengers connected in flight.”

Starlink is operated by SpaceX, Elon Musk’s space company. Starlink uses satellites that orbit closer to Earth than many other satellite systems to provide broadband internet, including on airplanes.

“We are proud to bring Starlink on board American Airlines, delivering fast and reliable internet to passengers and crew,” Vice President of Starlink Enterprise Sales at SpaceX Jason Fritch said in a statement. “Whether traveling for leisure or business, Starlink enables a fully connected experience gate to gate, making every flight smoother and more enjoyable.”

Several U.S. airlines already use or have announced plans to use Starlink, including Hawaiian Airlines, United Airlines, Alaska Airlines and Southwest Airlines. JSX, a public-charter carrier, also uses the service. Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines are separate brands owned by Alaska Air Group.

“Alaska is set to bring fast, responsive and reliable Wi-Fi to its fleet starting in 2026, with all aircraft — regional, narrowbody and widebody — connected by 2027, alongside our Hawaiian Airlines Starlink-equipped aircraft,” a press release from Alaska Airlines published August 2025 reads. “This innovative enhancement is part of Alaska’s multi-layer vision to deliver a truly elevated travel experience for every guest at every fare.

“From unifying loyalty into a single, seamless industry-leading program, to launching a premium credit card with unmatched travel perks, and now, bringing home-quality internet to the skies globally, even on full flights and in remote areas.”
