Neoen has revealed plans for two new battery energy storage system installations, according to a report from pv magazine France. The combined capacity of the projects is 348 megawatts and 896 megawatt-hours, representing an expansion of the company’s activities in both nations.
The developments were announced during an official French presidential visit to Japan. The French installation will be situated in Vernou-la-Celle-sur-Seine and is designed for 248 megawatts and 496 megawatt-hours. It is anticipated to become the largest battery facility in France and the first to link directly to the national high-voltage transmission system.
Located near a key electrical substation, the system is intended to support grid stability in the Ile-de-France region. Work on the site is slated to start in the summer of 2026, with operations expected to commence in 2028, pending further environmental reviews. This initiative follows another major storage project by the company in Brittany, which is reported to be approaching its final stages.
The company noted that this project continues its collaboration with the Japanese firm Nidec, representing the twelfth joint venture between the two entities. Nidec is contracted to provide the battery units, assemble them at a French plant, and maintain the system for two decades.
Simultaneously, Neoen is initiating its first investment in Japan with a facility in Hyogo prefecture. The Ako Battery project is planned for 100 megawatts and 400 megawatt-hours. Neoen is working with partners Equans and Toho on this endeavor and secured a grid connection agreement in January 2026. Construction is forecast to start shortly, aiming for a 2028 operational date.
Globally, Neoen manages a battery portfolio of 2.8 gigawatts and 8.1 gigawatt-hours that is either active or being built across several countries. The company has a target to add 10 gigawatts of capacity by the year 2030.
