Fresh controversy is surrounding Kanye West’s planned summer concert in France, with officials reportedly exploring ways to stop the show from going ahead. The rapper’s scheduled performance in Marseille has sparked renewed backlash over his past antisemitic remarks and recent public controversies. The move comes just after he was prevented from entering the UK, leading to the cancellation of his highly anticipated Wireless Festival headline shows.

Why is Marseille pushing back?
Kanye West is scheduled to perform at Marseille’s Velodrome stadium on June 11, in what would be his only show in France this summer. However, the planned event has already met strong political resistance, as per a report by The Daily Mail.
A source close to Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez told AFP that the minister is “highly determined” and is exploring “all options” to stop the concert from taking place.

Opposition to the show had already been building earlier this year. Marseille’s socialist mayor, Benoît Payan, publicly declared that the rapper was “not welcome” in the city. In a social media post, he wrote: “I refuse to let Marseille be a showcase for those who promote hatred and unabashed Nazism.”The backlash follows renewed criticism over Ye’s history of antisemitic remarks. Last year, the rapper came under fire after releasing a song titled “Heil Hitler” and promoting a swastika T-shirt on his website. Those incidents have remained central to the criticism surrounding his live appearances, as per a report by The Daily Mail.
What happened with the UK festival?
France’s reported efforts come shortly after Ye was barred from entering the United Kingdom. He had been due to headline the Wireless Festival in London’s Finsbury Park from July 10 to July 12, where he was expected to perform his first UK shows in more than a decade. However, his electronic travel authorisation was blocked by the British government, which ruled that his presence would not be “conducive to the public good.”
The decision forced organisers to cancel the three-day outdoor event, with refunds offered to ticket holders, as per a report by The Daily Mail.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer said: “Kanye West should never have been invited to headline Wireless.”
He added, “This government stands firmly with the Jewish community, and we will not stop in our fight to confront and defeat the poison of antisemitism. We will always take the action necessary to protect the public and uphold our values.”

How have officials and sponsors reacted?
The pressure around the festival had been mounting even before the visa decision. Sponsors including Diageo, Pepsi, and Anheuser-Busch InBev withdrew support, while PayPal said its branding would no longer appear in future Wireless promotional material, as per a report by The Daily Mail.
Jewish groups also welcomed the decision. The Board of Deputies of British Jews said meaningful engagement would require genuine remorse, while the Jewish Leadership Council condemned the booking amid rising antisemitic attacks.
Ye later issued an apology in January through a full-page advertisement in The Wall Street Journal, where he said his bipolar disorder had led to “a four-month long, manic episode of psychotic, paranoid and impulsive behaviour that destroyed my life.”
Still, criticism has continued. Health Secretary Wes Streeting described it as a “pattern of behaviour” and accused the rapper of using mental health as an excuse. With pressure now extending from London to Marseille, the future of Ye’s planned French performance remains uncertain.
