Malta Freeport has welcomed the CMA CGM Berenice on its maiden call to the island, becoming the largest methanol dual-fuel container vessel to call at the terminal.
The massive vessel measures 366 metres in length, has a beam of 51 metres and can carry a nominal capacity of 16,204 TEUs.
Sailing under the Maltese flag, CMA CGM Berenice is the fifth in a series of six methanol dual-fuel container ships introduced by CMA CGM as part of its fleet renewal and decarbonisation strategy.
The vessel combines its alternative-fuel capability with engineering and hydrodynamic features aimed at improving fuel efficiency and reducing emissions, including an optimised hull and energy-saving propulsion systems.
CMA CGM Berenice arrived at Malta Freeport as part of the MEX 1 Asia-Mediterranean service, berthing at Terminal One, where cargo operations were carried out using five megamax quay cranes.
Malta Freeport Terminals CEO Alex Montebello said the arrival demonstrates the confidence placed in the terminal by CMA CGM and its ability to handle the latest generation of container vessels.
CMA CGM VP Line Philippe Lesbros described the maiden call as a demonstration of the shipping group’s commitment to its energy transition, while also highlighting Malta’s strategic position within its Mediterranean network.
Malta Freeport is meanwhile continuing its own investment and decarbonisation programme, with the terminal targeting a 30% reduction in CO₂ emissions by 2030.
