Sophomore forward Alicia Tournebize injured her finger and will be sidelined for multiple weeks.

Tournebize has been in Paris participating in France’s World Cup training camp. The FFBB, the French Basketball Federation, announced the injury on Saturday.

Tournebize injured her finger in practice and underwent tests at INSEP (National Institute of Sport, Expertise and Performance), where the team was holding its training camp. No specifics about her injury were revealed.

The tests determined that Tournebize will be unable to play for several weeks. That means Tournebize will be unavailable for the World Cup, which begins on September 4. It is unknown if the injury will affect her availability for the Gamecocks.

What does this mean for the Gamecocks? Chris Wellbaum and fellow subscribers are discussing it now on the Women’s Basketball forum.

South Carolina’s first exhibition game, against College of Charleston, is not until September 27, five weeks away. However, South Carolina’s first real game is not until November 2, over 10 weeks away.

The FFBB announced that Tournebize will leave the training camp, but did not specify if she is leaving immediately to return to the Gamecocks, or if she will remain in France until roster cutdowns.

As part of the announcement, the FFBB said (in French, translated by Google):

“After suffering a finger injury during practice, the forward underwent medical examinations this Friday at INSEP, which confirmed she will be sidelined for several weeks. Wishing you a speedy recovery, Alicia.”

Tournebize’s injury came the same week that teammate Agot Makeer is playing for Canada in the Olympic Pre-Qualifying Tournament.

Ayla McDowell played for the Brazilian senior national team at the FIBA South American Qualifier. She averaged 17.8 minutes, 4.8 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 1.3 assists, and helped Brazil claim the bronze medal, good enough to qualify for next year’s AmeriCup Tournament.

Earlier this summer, junior Joyce Edwards played for the USA Basketball 3X3 senior national team this summer. She played in two tournaments in May and won a gold medal at the 3X3 World Cup in June.
