Tiffany & Co. is staying on the court at the U.S. Open.

The jeweler and the United States Tennis Association have renewed their nearly four-decade relationship with a new multiyear partnership, continuing Tiffany’s role as the tournament’s official trophy crafter.

The relationship dates to 1987, when Tiffany silversmiths began crafting the U.S. Open championship trophies. Today, the house is responsible for several  awards for the tournament, including the Men’s and Women’s Singles Championship trophies and the doubles trophies.

Each unique trophy is handcrafted in sterling silver at Tiffany’s hollowware workshop in Cumberland, R.I., where artisans employ traditional techniques including spinning, silversmithing, chasing, hand engraving and polishing. The 18-inch singles trophies are produced over a period of about six months, underscoring a relationship with the tournament rooted as much in craft as sports sponsorship.

“The U.S. Open is one of the world’s most celebrated sporting events, and we are honored to continue our nearly four-decade partnership with the USTA,” said Anthony Ledru, president and chief executive officer of Tiffany & Co. “Together, we share a commitment to legacy, excellence and innovation. As the official trophy crafter, Tiffany & Co. is proud to create the iconic trophies that commemorate the sport’s greatest achievements and showcase the exceptional craftsmanship that has defined our house for nearly two centuries.”

The renewal comes as Tiffany has increasingly brought that craftsmanship out from behind the scenes during the tournament. For the fourth consecutive year, the jeweler will operate a pop-up at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, located near Fountain Plaza and which opened Sunday and will run through Sept. 13.

This year’s installation will offer visitors a closer look at the making of the championship trophies, including displays of traditional engraving tools used by Tiffany craftspeople. Keepsake versions of the Men’s and Women’s Singles Championship trophies will also be on view, alongside a photo installation incorporating Tiffany Blue tennis balls and trophy-inspired elements.

Tiffany’s connection to sports extends well beyond tennis. The jeweler’s trophy-making history includes some of American sports’ most recognizable prizes, including the Vince Lombardi Trophy for the Super Bowl and trophies for the NBA, Major League Baseball and professional golf. Its Cumberland workshop produces more than 65 varieties of trophies each year using techniques that trace back to the house’s 19th-century silversmithing tradition.

The full suite of U.S. Open trophies will return to the court for the singles championship ceremonies, presented in a Tiffany-branded display.
