Marking the ambitious third chapter in Louis Vuitton’s explorations alongside visionary independent watchmakers, La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton has partnered with Master Watchmaker Denis Flageollet of De Bethune to introduce the LVDB-03 Louis Varius Project. Uniting thirty specialists across fifteen horological and decorative crafts, the collaboration reinterprets Abraham-Louis Breguet’s legendary nineteenth-century sympathique concept through an avant-garde horological pairing: an architectural master clock paired with an exclusive execution of De Bethune’s DB25 GMT Starry Varius wristwatch housed within a blued titanium Louis Vuitton Tambour Taiko case.
At the core of the monumental clock lies a key-wound manufacture movement developed entirely by De Bethune, comprising 763 meticulously finished components. Regulated by a remontoir d’égalité and sustained by twin large barrels, the calibre operates at a steady 18,000 vibrations per hour (2.5 Hz) to generate an exceptional 11-day power reserve. The companion DB25 GMT wristwatch, driven by the De Bethune-engineered Calibre DB2507LV, docks directly into a central cradle atop the clock. Once secured, the watch engages in mechanical sympathie through its winding crown, prompting the mother clock to automatically wind the wristwatch every ten hours and recalibrate its time display every two hours whenever a variance of up to seven minutes occurs.
The clock’s structural profile honours the drum-like silhouette of the Louis Vuitton Tambour, mirrored in double-sided complementary hour markers and anchored by De Bethune’s signature polished, thermally blued titanium dial adorned with a starry sky and Milky Way motif. Mounted upon an adjustable titanium plinth embellished with blued meteorite marquetry, the instrument echoes historical marine chronometers with multi-angle positioning across its substantial 310 mm footprint. Encircling the mechanism, three rotating 5N rose gold panorama rings—conceptualised with Belgian artist François Schuiten and hand-engraved by Master Engraver Michèle Rothen—depict epic travel narratives spanning locomotives on viaducts, hot-air balloons over savannahs, and alpine sherpas beneath a hand-engraved rose gold dome honouring the constellation Hercules.
Housed in a bespoke polished titanium trunk created by the historic Louis Vuitton workshops in Asnières, the entire creation unites grand mechanical mastery, poetic fantasy, and high-craft trunkmaking into a singular, tour de force achievement of contemporary horological art.
