Societe Generale (SCGLY) is taking another step to expand its presence in digital assets, widening access to its dollar-denominated stablecoin as it looks to connect traditional finance with blockchain infrastructure. Through its digital asset unit, Societe Generale-FORGE, the bank has made its USD CoinVertible token available on MetaMask via a partnership with Consensys, a move that could extend its reach to millions of users and a broad network of decentralized applications. The integration allows users to convert fiat into the token, trade crypto assets, and pay blockchain transaction fees, potentially improving usability and positioning the stablecoin as a more practical tool within on-chain ecosystems.
The timing reflects a broader shift in the stablecoin market, where adoption has accelerated following new US legislation governing these tokens last year. Stablecoins, typically pegged to traditional assets like the US dollar, are increasingly being used for cross-border transfers and blockchain-based payments due to their speed and programmable features. Societe Generale-FORGE’s leadership suggests that banks could bring established capabilities such as compliance, risk management, and governance into these systems, which may help bridge gaps between traditional finance and decentralized platforms. The decision to prioritize a dollar-denominated token appears aligned with current global usage patterns, where dollar-linked stablecoins dominate transaction activity.
Even so, competitive pressures remain significant. Market leaders such as Tether and Circle (NYSE:CRCL) continue to command market values of $185 billion and $79 billion respectively, far exceeding USD CoinVertible’s $27 million. Other entrants, including PayPal with its PYUSD at about $4 billion, and Fidelity Investments, which launched a stablecoin earlier this year, further highlight how traditional financial firms are increasing their presence in the space. Societe Generale’s latest integration could be part of a broader effort to scale adoption, though the gap with established crypto-native players remains substantial.
