\nEurope\u2019s largest printed multi-family residential building has been completed in Bezannes, northeastern France by a team of Plurial Novilia, a subsidiary of Action Logement, and German construction manufacturer Peri 3D Construction using Cobod\u2019s Bod2 printer.\n<\/p>\n
Called \u201cViliaSprint\u00b2\u201d, the 800-sq-m building contains 12 social housing flats over three storeys, marking a change from the single-storey buildings that most often get printed.<\/p>\n
Project proponents say printing the building shaved three months off the schedule compared to traditional construction methods. Printing was finished in 34 days instead of the expected 50 days, cutting shell construction time in half.<\/p>\n
Optimised prefabricated floor slab installation contributed to the quick building time, as it halved the number of times the print gantry needed to be repositioned.<\/p>\n
Three operators oversaw the print using a tablet computer.<\/p>\n
Waste on site was reduced by half, in part due to the curved geometry printing allows. That curvature also cut the amount of concrete needed by 10%. It was mixed on site, cutting transport costs and emissions.<\/p>\n
Switzerland\u2019s Holcim supplied the concrete reinforced with synthetic macro fibres.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s the first building in France where both the load-bearing structure and all walls were printed directly on-site.<\/p>\n

Plurial Novilia built a near-identical building on the same site using conventional methods, so ViliaSprint\u00b2 provides a comparison for both construction and building performance.<\/p>\n
The team now plans to print a 40-unit residential complex using two printers simultaneously, hoping that, through scale, print time will be cut by a factor of four and that construction cost will be brought into line with conventional construction.<\/p>\n
Dr. Fabian Meyer-Br\u00f6tz, Peri 3D Construction\u2019s managing director, said: \u201cThe result shows vividly what is already possible in 3D building printing today, faster construction, fewer workers, and fully load-bearing structures. This is an important milestone and motivation to push this technology further.\u201d<\/p>\n
