We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.<\/p>\n<p>Your support makes all the difference.Read more<\/p>\n<p>Two women \u200bdied after a boat carrying about 80 migrants trying to cross to Britain \u2060from France capsized near Calais, the local French administration said on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We regret to say that we \u2060found two people, \u200btwo \u2060women, who had died,&#8221; said Christophe Marx, an official \u2060for the Pas-de-Calais administration, adding \u200bthat \u2060authorities had rescued the \u200cothers.<\/p>\n<p>The deaths highlight the difficulties faced by Britain and France over \u200ctackling small boats \u200ctransporting migrants illegally across the English Channel.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, Britain said it would pay France up to \u00a3660 million under a three-year \u200bborder security deal to \u200ctry to clamp \u2060down on illegal migrant \u2060crossings of the Channel, with part of \u200cthe \u200bfunding contingent on \u200cresults.<\/p>\n<p>The move is yet another attempt to slash the rising numbers of people making the perilous journey to the UK<a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/home-news\/channel-migrants-death-boat-sinking-b2954334.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Around \u00a3160m of this money will be spent on new tactics, such as policing to stop \u201ctaxi boats\u201d picking up migrants offshore, and is conditional on the success of the French operation, the Home Office said..<\/p>\n<p>France will be measured on the number of boats stopped, the number of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/people-smugglers\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">people smugglers<\/a> arrested and the number of migrants stopped from boarding dinghies, among other things.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/france\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/d34c04b0c8e022fa2fdc2720df4a01baY29udGVudHNlYXJjaGFwaSwxNzU3NTgxNjA4-2.80447285.jpg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"A boat trying to cross the Channel\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/>A boat trying to cross the Channel (PA Wire)<\/p>\n<p>The UK will pay around \u00a3501m for more officers on the beaches of northern France and more surveillance technology, despite a previous boost in funding failing to bring the number of Channel crossings down.<\/p>\n<p>The Home Office has said that there will be a 40 per cent increase in the number of boots on the ground in northern France, taking the number of law enforcement officers from 700 to nearly 1,100.<\/p>\n<p>Home secretary Shabana Mahmood has pledged the deal would stop migrants making the dangerous journey to the UK, but the charity, Refugee Council, said ministers were \u201ctreating the symptom, not the cause\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Under the previous Conservative government, then-prime minister <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/rishi-sunak\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rishi Sunak<\/a> agreed to give France almost \u00a3500m over three years to tackle small boat crossings. Despite the surge in funding and policing, crossings in the Channel have soared, with some 41,472 people arriving in the UK by small boat in 2025.<\/p>\n<p>This was up from 36,816 people in 2024, and 29,437 in 2023.
