The artist formerly known as Kanye West<\/a> found a moment to inject some humor while testifying in court<\/a> in his copyright infringement<\/a> trial on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

According to Billboard<\/a>, Ye was asked by his attorney if he won a Grammy for \u201cBrothers in Paris,\u201d a court-friendly reference to \u201cN****s in Paris.\u201d The question caused him to break away from his \u201ccalm and expressionless\u201d demeanor while on the stand, and respond, \u201cWhat\u2019s the real name?\u201d<\/p>\n

The courtroom gallery, including Ye, reportedly broke out into laughter.<\/p>\n

Ye is being sued by four producers \u2014 DJ Khalil, Sam Barsh, John Mease and Dan Seeff \u2014 alleging he used an uncleared sample off the song \u201cMSD PT2\u201d on the demo for \u201cHurricane,\u201d which was played during the Kanye West Presents The Donda Album Release event at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta<\/a> in 2021.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe went through the normal process to get it taken care of,\u201d Ye said in regards of clearing the sample, maintaining the four producers intentionally stalled and spurned industry-standard split approval.<\/p>\n

\u201cI pride myself on giving people what they deserve,\u201d he asserted, adding, \u201cI feel like a lot of people try to take advantage of me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ye has dealt with over a dozen copyright infringement lawsuits over the course of his career.<\/p>\n

A judge dismissed most of the four producers\u2019 initial lawsuit, through the company Artist Revenue Advocates, in February, on the grounds that they only owned the master recording rights to \u201cMSD PT2.\u201d As a result, they could not receive royalties from the final versions of \u201cHurricane\u201d and \u201cMoon.\u201d<\/p>\n

The four producers narrowed the scope of their suit, seeking a portion of the money made off the album listening event.<\/p>\n
